Makes sense I guess that there wouldn't be a taboo around eating the dead in monster society, since the main practical reason we humans don't usually eat each other (beyond the moral reason of it being in poor taste lmao) is that diseases found in human meat are far more likely to infect us than diseases found in, say, cow meat. The monster races are all so radically different from each other that a disease that infects one probably wouldn't do much for the others, so a werewolf can eat a lizardman with few ill effects as long as it's prepared properly.

The dead eating is pretty cool. Like brave said, the main concern is same species eating same species. Problem is that you could create a culture where everyone eats the dead, and the cases of brain disease and the like would be extremely rare because a much smaller fraction of the population could possibly get it, let alone actually get sick from it.

Too rare, that is, to see the connection.

So both sides are true: It's dangerous to do it because of disease risk, but the danger is juuuuust rare enough that people still do it, and it's difficult to create a culture where only OTHER species are allowed to eat the dead.

Also, the slimes were great. They simultaneously made slimes the best communicators as well as justified them being just about everywhere.

I hope Susuki's life isn't that short :( One would think her lifespan would be at least somewhat similar to that of a human considering how much closer she looks like a human.

I might be a little edgy here, but...I don’t really see an issue with cannibalizing the dead.

With caveats, granted. Someone dies from an illness, don’t eat them. Plus, avoid the parts of the body where toxins build up or pose the most danger, like the brain. I would also think you would want to avoid the liver, kidneys, and gallbladder. And any cancerous growths.

But eating the remains of someone who died due to old age is probably something that only comes up uncommonly. Plus, the amount you would be eating would be such a small percentage spread out over long periods of non-cannibalism that the health effects would be negligible.

Granted, I don’t know much about cannibalism. Maybe I’m missing something. But I figure that I won’t really care after I’m dead. There are plenty of ways of disposing of dead bodies, too. Just cremate me or eat me.

I don't think it was said that werewolves eat other werewolves, in fact it would surprise me if anyone one raise at others from its race there well baring the reptiles I don't think they can get sick from cannibalism but I think it is more waste not what is provided in there mindset the person who died is gone now only meat is left would you let meat spoil or would to make sure it was put to good use but I suppose that's all conjecture

Most complex animal like mammal avoid cannibalism. To avoid being eaten by the same species, animal develop protein that will "attack" protein in the brain if it eaten by the same species, it's called prion protein and the condition that happen from this is called prion disease. Prion disease is fatal, it can kill within less than a year once the symptoms appear, that's why we rarely see cannibalism in nature...

The most famous prion disease that happen in human is Kuru disease, a disease that happen in some tribe in New Guinea that have cannibalism ritual similar to this manga, eating the dead family member.

I want to post this episode of an archaeology podcast that deals with cannibalism. Its not massively in-depth but I thought it would be an interesting addendum to this chapter as it looks a few instances of human cannibalism across our history and its use as a cultural practice. It also discusses some of the topics that were briefly touched upon in this chapter, like the way in which cannibalism has been used to malign those who practised it as well as just how in general the taboo nature of it in our own culture has made it difficult to research or even talk about.

People would be eating each other if not for prions. Just like how we cook meat, we evolved/adapted/whatever mixture of the two to avoid cannibalism for survival.

"I thought I truly understood, but I was merely theorizing. The wall to understanding is unbelievably high. I intend to carry this realization with me as I move forward."

Absolutely fantastic line. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite stories out there in terms of pure worldbuilding and culture.

Let the strength that was part of me, flow into you. Let the pieces of myself that I no longer need, serve you.

Let my life not be wasted. Let me live on in you.

... Some feeling like that, I suppose?

Just like how people feel hurt when a partner tells them that they don't like/love him anymore, this should be their equivalent.

It's fascinating how versatile slimes are in terms of language. They are literally microphones that are able to pick up any frequency of sound as long as it's considered as such. Mangaka is smart to use it's physical features to infer of how it can stand in hte world mangaka made and its reasonable.
