We canonically know that she's literally a child.
Well, she's a minor. "Child" is kinda misleading; just look at her. But yes, I did notice the recurring plot point about her being exploited on that basis. It's not really relevant though.

Ruri chan, and underage explorers are really getting exploited by the guild. The guild gets all the rewards, and they end up with close to nothing.

If she could get 6k yen a month from clearing the nest, wonder how much a regular adventurer would get from the more frequent clean-ups...

Not that it would be any less a crime, but she is not a child. At 16, she is young adult. Yes she hasn't reached her majority, but should could go thrue a bureaucratic process to be legally an adult.
I know what you are trying to say in a legal independence sense, but when I hear "young adult", I think of someone in their early twenties, not mid-teens.

Is this the hill you want to die on.
@sketches

Might not be quite the hill you think I'm on, but yes, under the right circumstances, I would be willing to die defending a "minor's" right to earn their own living and make their own life's choices. Especially if they are an orphan or are in an abusive relationship with their perents/guardians.

Typically in modern first world cultures the age this can happen is 16, but by 14 I was already working and supporting my family. By 16 I was mostly living independently. So yes, I would definitely support someone who is clearly being neglected and taken advantage of.
