My slightly off the wall theory; the name Sakura is made up, the design implied to be mitsuko is actually haruka inserting herself into the winning role, and the sakura design actually belonged to mitsuko. The whole story is told to impart a lesson and it’s not that much of a stretch if we already think haruka is fudging details.
