The skeleton knight isekai did something with this idea too. He's basically the most overpowered thing on that world he landed himself on, but someone's mother who just looked like a housewife schooled the hell out of him because he doesn't actually know how to fight worth a crap. If you have close to equal skill levels, the one with more power behind the skill has an advantage. But if there's an overwhelming skill level difference, it could go another way.

The mushroom info says "strengthen's hidden abilities". So unless his hidden ability is to be an OP protagonist, that shouldn't be the main reason.

So just gonna wash over that whole "girl waking up beside/on top of him" thing?

@Nakanowatari Yeah, I could understand if he was saying 'gyaru' or something, since there is no real equivalent in western culture, but he's calling them ビッチ -- slut.
That's a pretty well understood concept in English.

Edit: In chapter 9 they used 'bitches', which is at least the re-transliteration if not the translation, which is why I'm confused why they returned to 'mean girls'

@xfaca in this case I think the Japanese "bitch" is simply a borrowed word (I think thats what they call it) and is not equivalent to the English bitch which as you said means slut. IMO gyaru and bitch (in manga) usually refer to the same thing anyway, almost always the case the characters are a gyaru or bitches simply from how they dress and how they conduct themselves.

Just because they have cheat skills doesn't make them strong. Especially when they don't know how to use them.

@Nakanowatari Well, yeah, Japanese plays very fast and loose with loanwords, that's my point. Bitch means slut in Japanese ('thot' might be a better translation, but that's still a very niche word, the meaning of which hasn't crystallised yet), not in English. Using 'mean girl' as a synonym for bitch in English would sort of make sense if you wanted to PG-ify it, but that's not how the word is used in Japanese, and it makes the girls' reaction to him calling them that pretty weird.
Using 'bitch' was reasonable, IMO, since it isn't really as harsh or specific as slut - which matches the Japanese usage of the pejorative - but is still something quite offensive to be called, and people who knew enough Japanese to know how they use the word would be able to infer the original meaning.

When the kobolds defeated them, i thought of the final fantasy victory theme playing in the bkg.

@sketches

IIRC one of the "abilities" he got (that he didn't want) seems like a demerit to make have a bad leveling speed. The manga didn't mention it, but the novel did. I'm not so sure about the translation I read though.

However all the useless things are useful, and I think that's no exception. Notice how much his stats went up from LV1 to LV2? From what I've found translated, it doesn't go too far forward in the story, so this is just my theory. What he thinks is a penalty to leveling is actually does make it slower to level up but the levels count for a lot more growth. He's killed a massive number of Goblins for example to reach his current low level. A lot of the Goblins out-level him considerably.

Now if the level difference between you and what you kill affects you getting experience, then he has a big advantage in the long term. He can keep growing from lower level mobs for longer than others. Higher level enemies may at a point be sparser, and of course they'll be tougher/more dangerous. And if anyone later on has the ability to see someone's level, they'll greatly underestimate him. Plus if there is some sort of level cap...

I'm uncertain if the mushrooms have any effect. Perhaps having more time between leveling up means time to eat more mushrooms, and the mushrooms you eat will add some stats at the next level up? That's only a guess. In any case he hasn't mentioned his stats in a while - only his level.
