Glad to see this popping up on MD, so I don't have to go to a certain other terrible site to read updates.

@Doomer: He didn't have to tell her, he can just say 'sure I'll sell it for what you mentioned' then sell it for more and pocket those extra profits. She has no way of confirming this since she rarely ever visit the north part of town and these transactions tend to be done in private.

Also, you think it's just 'some' materials, but you seem to forget about the warehouse, the fact he even used a magical contract which is VERY costly (have you ever seen anyone else used a magic contract so far? there's a reason for that), all the hiring of workers/workshops when the thing actually goes into full production, etc without actually keeping the rights to the product (Myne keep the rights of production, Lutz have the rights of sales) and remember this is with the other party being a kid who's yet to have baptism and also from the poorer side of town.

Yeah he's greedy, he's a merchant, not a philanthropist, the point isn't that he want money, but that he bargains with her fairly and even teach her things she didn't notice (look at how Frida and her grandpa handle Myne for comparison)
You know what even more greedy, and much less humane, people do? Threats, kidnapping, imprisonment, and even slavery contract.

There's a reason that
Some characters 'joke' about Benno having romantic interest towards Myne isn't a one-time thing.
(more specifically, that she's his "Water Goddess")

He treat her that much better compare to how he treat others.

@whimsicat oh wow he's only 99% a greedy asshole, what a fucking hero. doesn't change the fact that he steals her ideas and money. you are acting as if he's doing it to help her but in reality he's just doing it to get closer to her so he can exploit her further.

@Doomer: Where does he 'steal' her ideas? He buy the rights to making the shampoo, a proper trade, and his contract with her over paper is also done as proper contract (hell, magical contract even, as in literally God will smite you for breaking it)
Really, find me one product where he literally take it from her without paying anything.

Cuz otherwise you seem to be projecting a bit on his actions.
Seriously, what do you expect him, a merchant, to do to not be seen as greedy? Make everything for her for free?

@YamiryuuZero:
She's Frida, granddaughter of the merchant guild leader.
During Tuuli's baptism Myne made Tuuli a hairpin which stood out from among the crowd, Frida who saw it asked her grandfather to get one for herself.
So when guild leader learned that Myne was the one who made it, he commissioned her to make one for Frida.

Myne, wanting to make the product fit the customer, went to meet Frida to get an idea of how to make the hairpin to fit the dress/hairstyle (in this case, 2 hairpins since she's doing the twintails)
Between a sense of kinship and seeing the potential benefits, Frida befriended Myne.
To paraphrase Lutz: "When she talked about money, she had the same look as you(Myne) when you talk about books"

this is like saying "no the europeans didn't take any land, they bought it legally with beads" just because there was a trade it sure as shit doesn't mean it was a fair one...

@Doomer: Since you seem to think you have a better concept of what's fair, do answer my previous question.

What do you think Benno should've done to make it so he's not a greedy trash like you seem to think he is, keeping in mind he's a merchant and he's trying to make profits.
What is fair value, in your opinion? Do you even know how much, in term of that world, is the value he gave to Myne?

Because so far you're like the Brexit
"We want to leave!"
"Ok, so can you give us the specific details?"
"UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

It is unexpected and nice to see this get translated again. The WN translator quit awhile back and it got picked up more recently. But the last release, from the new guy, stated with the anime coming out the WN is officially getting licensed so after his next post the WN will be dropped again. T-T

@whimsicat she got materials and a warehouse just so she could make paper which in turn would be sold to him to be resold... he is making a pretty profit of that alone but worse than that is that he traded that for shampoo, a luxury item that she had a 100% monopoly on which would be easy to make and have a fucking huge market. she could easily have gotten her family into massive wealth if she had kept it and just sold shampoo but nope she sold it so she could get material to sell yet another item to the same dude...

@Doomer: Reminder:
1. She's from a poor family.
2. She doesn't care about profits, it's Benno who's been pounding it into her to care (Myne just want books)
3. None of her family members ever ran a business, her dad is a soldier and her mom is a worker not a store owner.

So with all these in mind, do tell, outside of some ass-pull development, how would a single family with no connection to the rich, or even registration with the merchant guild, run a business to sell shampoo? (Heck, Myne and Lutz get their registrations done basically thanks to the hairpin and Benno using it as bait)
The shampoo he'll be making will be of much better quality/varieties, with materials that Myne's family will likely never get access to normally.

It's not like Myne will be making any shampoo for his store, he's only buying the rights, the actual making/hiring workers/workshops etc will also be out of Benno's pocket.

And again, he's paying for basically everything the two spent for at least 6 months, and the magic contract (again, this thing alone is EXPENSIVE, not only is the material to make it very rare, just having access to it is in a way a show of how well your store is doing)
All of that and he doesn't keep the right to paper and for each paper sold Myne get cut of it as royalty, so it's not like Benno keep all the money here.

Also, all these are just to RESEARCH making paper, not mass producing them.
He's BUYING all the papers the two make until their baptism, after which they can officially start mass producing it for real (as in, making new set of tools for adult size, hiring more people, securing a workshop location, etc, all of which, again, will be on Benno's)

Seriously, taking a step back to look at it, he's investing in a project that has no guarantee to success on the words of a kid from the poor district and with them keeping the rights.
This mean that if at the end of this Myne and Lutz decide to sell through another store, Benno's investments would go to benefit someone else, since because of the magic contract there's absolutely no way for him to get papers without Myne/Lutz's consent.

1. She's from a poor family.
so it's ok to rob her and her family of their chance of wealth because they are poor?
2. She doesn't care about profits, it's Benno who's been pounding it into her to care (Myne just want books)
so it's ok to rob her because she's financially retarded? (which really is weird seeing as shes a grown as woman in a childs body, you would think she would be smarter)
3. None of her family members ever ran a business, her dad is a soldier and her mom is a worker not a store owner.
so it's ok to block any chance for them to actually become merchants because they aren't already merchants?

>so with all these in mind, do tell, outside of some ass-pull development, how would a single family with no connection to the rich, or even registration with the merchant guild, run a business to sell shampoo? sell a large quantity to friends and neighbors, once you have enough money contact a merchant and pay him to be the middle man between the guild and yourself....

>It's not like Myne will be making any shampoo for his store, he's only buying the rights, the actual making/hiring workers/workshops etc will also be out of Benno's pocket.
yea poor guy, he has to hire workers to make him money. so because he doesn't have a 5 year old girl working for him you think he's not making mad cash from that deal? he owns the complete rights to this extremely popular product, he will be swimming in money so who cares if he has to hire some workers?

>Also, all these are just to RESEARCH making paper, not mass producing them.
He's BUYING all the papers the two make until their baptism, after which they can officially start mass producing it for real (as in, making new set of tools for adult size, hiring more people, securing a workshop location, etc, all of which, again, will be on Benno's
i swear you are so dense, you literally said it yourself HE'S BUYING THE PAPER. he is the one who buys it and sells it along so of course he would invest into it so he could make more money, it's not because he's generous or kind it's because he can smell the money coming from it.

>Seriously, taking a step back to look at it, he's investing in a project that has no guarantee to success on the words of a kid from the poor district and with them keeping the rights.

that "investment" was "payment" for giving him that shampoo rights so he didn't do it because he trusted her or because he took a risk in it, he just paid what he promised to pay even though if it worked that money would just come right back at him....
