China was a pure socialism after the WW2. Millions upon millions of ordinary people starved to death. Then they reintroduced capitalism.
State controlled capitalism isn't really capitalism though, if anything, West Taiwan is Socialist with Nationalist characteristics. One could even say a National Socialist type of economy.

@flameshadowwolf Whether or not the rich "lead better lives" (whatever the hell that means - I'm going to assume you meant to say "have more money") than the poor is a foolish and worthless metric to determine whether or not an economic system is viable. A practical and worthwhile metric is: what are the living conditions of those in poverty, and what means are available to said people to earn wealth and social status for themselves?

You can complain about "capitalism" all you want; the hard truth is that being poor in capitalist America is exponentially better than being poor in almost any other country in the world. There is so much wealth flowing through this country that every single state, plus the federal government and the vast majority of churches, have food programs and medical assistance that pretty much anyone can apply to and have a reasonable chance of using. On average, living in poverty in America means threadbare clothes, a sparse but solid roof over your head, and enough food that you'll get fat if you overdo it. There are a fair number of folks who have less, but even then there are charities out the ass offering temporary accommodation of all sorts, and when the government isn't fucking up the economy there's all kinds of fast food joints, day jobs, and other opportunities to earn money. Oh, and prolific Internet access.

And if it wasn't for a small selection of relevant government laws, things would be even better. Example: https://fee.org/articles/how-government-encourages-food-waste/

Almost everywhere else in the world, living in poverty means you have none of these things.

@Chrona Correct. "State-controlled capitalism" is just a semantics game to conceal either mercantilism (the top economic entities maintain a monopoly and act as a co-equal arm of the government (see: Google, Facebook, Twitter)) or one of the Bastard Marxist Trio: communism, facism, socialism.

Then they reintroduced capitalism. Now it's the second richest country in the world and nobody's starving.
D O U B T. Yeah, they're just sent in concentration camps. MUCH better.
Morbid humour aside... Sure, the average level of prosperity increases, but so does the gap between the rich and the poor, which ensures that people WILL starve. Besides, that was communism in China, not socialism. The latter is compatible with democracy, but the former not so much.

I don't even like Marx, but I can't tell if you're retarded. Feel free to be opposed to both Facism and Socialism, but you should really form your opinions from actually reading the works of those you hate as opposed to get told what those works say by someone else.

Only in America it is, well, because americans (conservatives, to be fair) are kind of retard and any social program is considered socialism to them. In true, these programs, incluiding public education for all, were already defended by classical liberal way before the french revolution.

This isn't how the economy works in any place of the world (maybe with exception of the case of monopoly or oligopoly, but even in these cases this is not completely true). Just the fact that the chinese economy take out hundreds of millions of people from starvation is sufficient to prove you wrong, and overall, the world is more prosperous than were ever before.

Besides, that was communism in China, not socialism.

Eh, it's socialism as long as it's only on paper or if it's just a program in a regular democracy. However, a socialist state always ends up as a communism. So, a socialist country = communist country. However, you can have a democratic country with socialist welfare programs to help the less fortunate and reduce crime effectively. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong about many aspects of socialism as long as you don't let the socialists gain unchecked power. Because then they will get rid of everyone else and establish communism. Just like national socialists would get rid of everyone else and establish a nazi country. There's an old proverb: Fire is a good servant but a bad master. The same applies to socialism.

I think that economists and sociologists should make a study over what Americans undestands as socialism, capitalism, comunism, liberalism and etc..., because they always got their meanings wrong. Someone even states that China was a state capitalism. Dude, if your country do not allows private rights over things like goods and propriety, then this isn't really any form of capitalism, Is just plainly a extreme form of socialism. Also, a capitalist country don't need to be a laisses faire system, so yes, there is bad capitalist countries out there, but not all of them are the same, nor do the good ones are the same. The economic system varies in accord to the laws and institutions of each country, so yes, China is NOW a capitalist country, because it made markets reforms, and we can call it a state capitalism country because its institutions, but it was'n like that before the 80's.

@flameshadowwolf its not wrong, its a modern way of thinking, but this series setting is based on earth medieval era, where people who are educated are really few, and their living standard is already below average (Myne father is a guard captain but they still life in a shack and they used to starve in winter), so for them an extra piece of bread is very welcomed and worth dying for.

Why is the comment thread full of political theory.... Sir, this is an Isekai Manga.

And it's a good isekai, where the protagonist doesn't get to just throw around their modern knowledge willy-nilly without consequence or pushback. Myne has to be cautious about how much she stands out (on threat of literal death, if she opposes the High Bishop (Temple Head) too directly). If you don't want a story of 'ascendance' that has actual worldbuilding, a well-thought-out society, and a complex narrative that extends beyond "get books," then you should probably look elsewhere; this manga chapter corresponds to the LN in Vol 4 of an estimated total of 33 volumes, so we've got a long way to go.

Many complaints about Myne's behavior seem to forget pre-established facts, so try re-reading the manga in one go to help refresh your memory, as one chapter a month can (understandably) leave you forgetting things.

Imagine you come here reading an Isekai fantasy about a different world. And the comment section is filled with politics and other bullshit from the world you are in.

And the worst part is, so many of them don't even do their research and draw parallels willy nilly.

The only saving grace is that there are a few people who actually know what they are talking about.
