It's not the bullies. From her HS flashback where she talked about being a pushover, we've seen couple of these girls talking to her while one of them were crying in the middle so people theorized that crying one was liking Sunao so they asked ger to break up / get separated with him and that's why she did it.

Of course that doesn't explain the usage of such a retarded lie or completely forgetting about it but eh. At this point its a "writing yourself in to a corner" situation for the author. No matter what the actual reason is, it will not be enough to explain it.

What you described is bullying, just the more subtle way, which is more about group pressuring you into doing something you don't want, making you feel like an outsider that does not belong in the group, and "othering" you.

I meant "not bullies" as in its not a "traditional" manga type of bullying. It was more akin to peer presure. She probably wasn't threatened but couldn't say no. There would be no consequence (that we know) to say no but her being a pushover is a plot point. Hopefully we will learn more in around chapter 100 with this pacing.

Being ostracized by your whole class is very much a consequence, especially for a kid. She probably held out for a while but no longer could, and has been eating herself up about it since. The big lie was the only way she (a literal kid, so dumb as rocks) could think of to get her best friend to leave her and not pine for her. So no, the mangaka didn't write herself in a corner, there's like 200 ways to go about explaining this is a believable way.

You're being unnecessarily pedantic then, and also pedantically incorrect, because, from what we know, she did not want to break up with him.
She told him an outrageous lie that would surely cause him to break up with her BECAUSE she decided to break up with him BECAUSE reasons that have not been explained by the author yet - is the logical chain here, the first part all but contains the second part, so it shouldn't be too much of a leap of logic to skip the redundant part and understand that the question posed expects the answer to the part that still remains mystery. When a person in a crowd suddenly collapses on the ground and you ask "why?", you do not want to hear "because gravity", you want to receive an answer which actually fills blanks in your knowledge.
