I'd suppose the dude was just telling Carol about his dream, in terms she could understand. I doubt that world even has patents, so talking about such a detail would be useless. Maybe he just said that in the dream he created an invention that was stolen. It's a bit strange the manga didn't bother to include any details, skipping over all of it.
