I’d respect idol culture a lot more if they’d just be honest about what they do. She says they sell “trust and admiration,” but what they really sell is this weird girlfriend experience for lonely creeps.

Any time I see weird creeper idol simps say "idols belong to the fans" to justify the idea that idols can't have a personal life that would "upset" the fandom I die a little inside. You get music, they get money. That's the exchange. If you need some sort of cringey parasocial relationship to fill the gaping hole in your heart, get help because this ain't it.

I do not agree with Idol simps as they allow parasocialism consume them, but I see where they are coming from.
Let's ignore the ones who clearly just want the hopium of "she's single, so it COULD happen".

They want their idol to continue to create and perform without relationship drama affecting them. You can see a marked shift in most artists' output depending on relationship status and when they have their first child.

My sister had a friend who was... not American. And she was divorcing her husband because she learned about his mistress. As the wine wrung out of her, she was not angry he had a mistress she was angry he was so indiscrete that she learned about the other woman's existence. So I think a lot of hatred towards idol partner isn't the idea that their idol has a personal life, its that personal life is intruding into their relationship with the artist and they lack the mental toolkit to properly process that disappointment.
There is also the added issue of a lot of famous people, especially young ones.... do make wise choices in relationship partners.

Add into this that many idols/agencies explicitly play up the "innocent" image. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Again, I just deal with this by not having my identity wrapped up in a performer but not everyone has that mental resilience.

they are facing competition with V-Tuber idols now. so maybe something will change? who knows.

V-tubers will only make it worse because they farm the "girlfriend experience" even harder. The only way that helps is Japanese law, I believe its libel law and personal information law, make it hard for "official" media to publish links between a Vtuber and a "real" person, which means that any leaks of the "real" person's personal life can't directly contain

But you had a case a couple years back where two vtubers came out to be dating and the girl had to vanish for several months because of the guy's absolutely insane, rabid fans going after her.
