Two observations.
First, with her compass broken, she either has to follow them, or least salvage one of theirs to complete her class exams.
Second, the teachers should be watching to prevent any cheating and fatalities. So they are complicit, or just grossly incompetent.

Not that you're wrong, but as these are the children of nobles, certain extra precautions are generally applied. Because nobles can be rather vindictive when their children are harmed.

So while you are correct that magic school are habitually lax where their commoners are concerned, they tend to watch over their highborn with a little more care, if for no other reason then self preservation.
