Well, typical Japanese use family names when referring to each other, to use there given names mean a fairly close connection that people with long history (such as family and childhood friends) would be more inclined to use, for recent couples being on a first name biases can be rather intimate in a social context, so for the MC to ask to be on such within a couple weeks at least of them dating is rather quick development into their romantic relationship.
