MC's father was an adventurer that went out and died in a dungeon so the mention of children made him remember what it was like to lose a parent that way.

The whole situation is definitely forced and stupid though. Wouldn't surprise me if it was a ploy of that guy/party to get the elf girl or revenge on MC.
