@Falatharo I see no mention of gradwing duck gradwin there, are you sure you aren't just thinking of that random pig in a single panel on that page as some trial? Since it is actually mentioned by name this chapter, I have trouble seeing it as being that one.

I think you read it wrong. If I'm not mistaken those tubes are indicators like HP and MP bars in traditional JRPG. They indicate what your HP and MP are.
