An important thing to recognise is that Cleo's will to fight wasn't reignited by Safia and Shrack showing up. When Cleo was drowning in regrets and lying down waiting to die, it was Kohaku's request that made him stand up again. "I want you to stay alive no matter what".
When Cleo was alone in that chapel surrounded by slavers about to find him, he still didn't feel like giving up. He said it himself: the situation could not be worse. He barely had the strength to stand.
But he did stand up. He did prepare to fight despite impossible odds. Why?
Because Kohaku is special. She's special because she has done impossible things before; if anyone can come back to life, its her. More importantly, she's special to him. He cares about her. He believes in her. Kohaku didn't just bring him back to life, she gave him a new reason to live. She became a precious companion and the Poffy Stop they built together with Safia and Shrack became something like a home.
So it doesn't matter how bad things are. It doesn't matter if Kohaku decides to leave his side. It doesn't matter that he's a pathetic bastard filled with regrets. As long as there's a chance Kohaku can live a happy life, he won't. give. up. Not even to fate.
The sequence where Cleo tries to use magic again while saying that he'll live with all he's got and he'll bring Kohaku back no matter what made my spine tingle and my heart beat faster. The whole damn chapter is so powerful: the depths of Cleo's despair only gets lower, but here he is picking himself back up every time, ready to climb out of this pit of darkness with his bare hands. its so good. this whole manga is so fucking good. Nanao Nanaki is so incredibly skilled and I can't imagine the effort it takes to craft a story, heck, a single moment like this. I'm in awe.
thanks for the chapter!! looking forward to the next one, but hope y'all get some rest in the 2 weeks! you deserve it
