Only in the sense that it was
his problems and
his life. Might not be necessarily a good character, but we are presented with character conflicts that are about him. He has a “personality” rather than just being a faceless backstory, and is in a situation where it is set up for
his character growth. Then you have another character just replace him in a way that any “character growth” feels unearned because MC is already a different person, and if he changes it will still not be the same person as the initial set up.
Other series don’t have this problem because we never meet the “previous host”, so the conflicts the MC is presented is purely the MC’s. Essentially, it’s an issue of POV. We are presented the conflict in one POV, then given the resolution from another POV.
