@daedalron most likely . we always see the people he changed in turn to be in a state of "coma" after he leaves. The soul in the original bodies are gone when he replaced them but body is still alive and he is there for a duration of time after which he has to return to the original world.

About lifespan. Either it's his body (cause his body was meant to die day before but MC inhabiting it changed fate) or finger of nirvana(would be interesting but unlikely. Because it would be hard to write a story without giving MC some OP skill that can increase his lifespan).
