The reality of how gay and lesbian people were treated in medieval settings is so brutal that this Shapiro style "facts don't care about your feelings" argument with a nun feels absurd at best and actual mockery of the struggles they faced at worst.

The novel and this adaptation and you are all referring to the setting as “medieval”, so let's start with the fact that the setting plainly isn't Mediaeval. Nor does it look like the Renaissance. Nor does it look like the period of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. Nope; it looks like the time of the Enlightenment, the span between the Reformation and the Industrial Age.

Now, across each of these periods and to some extent within each of these periods, how homosexuality was treated varied. The Mediaeval and Reformation periods tended to be harsh; the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods tended to be tolerant of homosexuality.

And, since the author's reach exceeds her grasp — in so many ways! — we don't know how tolerant or intolerant this fantasized world is or has been until-and-unless she just tells us.

Normally in manga its usually one of two extremes: either every single character is gay and its no big deal, or it's the most dark shit where someone gets abandoned by friends and family, losing their job, getting relentlessly harassed to the point of self harm and suicide or something like that. This one is more of a nice middle-ground, but still leaning more towards a lighthearted tone
