Lol, maybe I'm one of the few who actually like the plot. When I read the infamous chapter, I actually combed back the entire manga from the beginning and the hints were there. No actual lines explicitely told reader that the Male MC actually loves the Female MC, only that he admired her (even in chapter 24, when the female friend "quoted" that the boy told her when they were in the hotel that he loved his childhood friend, it was before they had relations with each other, so then again after that it could change. Maybe he did love the female lead before the whole thing with the female friend happened). And the Female MC's friend actually did not know that she would befriend the female lead in the future. Everybody gets triggered because of the NTR aspect, I fully understand that, because we view everything from the female lead's perspective. But re read the entire manga again, with the other characters' viewpoints in mind, I actually feel that storyline is quite acceptable, refreshing even. I hope the author continue without minding the complaints too much. Eventually, the story will unfold itself, so just be patient.
I wholeheartedly agree. It's an interesting and messy relationship dynamic at play here - a passing fling with a beautiful senpai whose feelings toward him might not be as deep as a crush, but are still strong enough for her to be vulnerable with him in his earnestness; and a still budding relationship with his childhood friend, an actual factual girl next door - she likes him, he likes her, but neither of them are confident.
His relationship with Yami is one of commiseration: two downtrodden and angst ridden teens who basically use each other to vent their feelings of inadequacy, befitting the darkness of her namesake.
His relationship with Hikari is one that will be defined by the trust they can build between them on the foundation of a childhood friendship, a positive relationship that contrasts with Yami's darker and messier one- it's already there, and he's building up the confidence to take the leap - but now he's bumped back into Yami and now stands at a crossroads. He'll probably reject her invitation to indulge in old comforts to choose to be with the girl he didn't think he deserved to be with. Not NTR, just good drama.

Sounds like damage control to me lol
It's not. As you might now, manga is drawn after the LN chapter is written. In the novel, she just kisses him and leaves saying "this is the happiest day of my life" to herself. Author just added an extra where she doesn't leave and they go for another round for the artist to draw.

I still stand by the story is not bad and has potential.

I also stand by that the way this comic/LN was released is why this is such a mess. Should have written out the light novel first and then had yom draw longer more robust chapters.

Drip feeding 4-7 pages chapters every 2 weeks is not good for drama development. Would have read much better in bigger chunks, dramas need more exposition than was given here.

It's the author's own doing for how poorly it was received, it's bad pacing which leads to a poorly told story. It deserves a low rating but not because I'm mad about the actual story, which I think is not bad(in fact i like it), but because it's just poorly developed. We're almost a year into this and for the first 80% it was being told as a silly romcom. There's also the fact that the author has to constantly point out what he was trying to go for on twitter and even had to point out the foreshadowing on X itself during one of the chapters kind of shows how poorly the ideas were implemented.

The mistake was the release schedule. Should have written out the novel more before releasing the manga. Props to them for trying to do both self-published, that takes a lot of work and dedication. However I think this is clearly highlighting how important editors are though. They needed someone to tell them releasing it this way was a mistake.

A few points I think the author failed on because of how this was released.

Lack of exposition due to constraints. Manga already has to constrain itself from a light novel, without the necessary pages to develop tension it's hard to convey drama elements. So instead of people seeing yami and yuu kissing and being like, I knew it! It was more like wtf is this? So now you have people who just straight hate yami now instead of people asking for more backstory on them together and now the backstory is tainted with yami being an unlikable character (even if it is not true). It didn't help that she meant to have sex with him to corrupt him at first either, which further made the audience hate her.

So now you have a character most people hate because the author messed up the build up and delivery. I think he meant for people to not like her at first after the reveal and then build sympathy but you lost any goodwill with that without better initial back story and exposition.

Yami and Yuu are written as assholes, plain and simple. You can chalk it up to youth and being afraid to expose their past but because Yuu wouldn't open up about his past relationships and yami not confronting Hikari before the kiss at the festival, they seem like straight up assholes. Now I'm not saying they are but if Yuu had just been honest with Hikari about his past a lot of the hatred for the two characters would probably not be there. Now we still have yet to see the aftermath and that will make a big difference. However, any sympathy that the author was trying to be afforded to both yami and yuu is now tainted and doesn't work well.

I honestly think the makings of a great high school drama were there and I think the story could have been really good. The execution was just awful.

Makes you think. What pissed off the mangaka to do this?
I’ve had the impression that editors are forcing authors to add multiple love entry to non-harem storylines in the past two years.

I between chapters 11 and 13, 99% of romantic comedies would introduce a secondary love interest. it became so common place, I assume it was forced on them.

All I'm gonna say is; It speaks VOLUMES that Yom felt the need to make this little aside at all.

Ngl, while the twist was a wild one and the story has fell off somewhat, the insane drop in rating is entirely undeserved. Imagine rating something a 1/10 because some drama was introduced. Funnily enough, I'd bet anything on most of the low ratings coming from "holier than thou" people screaming NTR (despite there being quite literally no NTR in the story) most of whom would jump at the opportunity to have sex with a hot girl if she offered.

This, actually. It was purely one-sided since the start and the dude has never explicitly said he likes /ourgirl/.
Until this arc, we were reading Hikari's pov, so why would Yuu say he likes her unless he was confessing? There are a good amount of hints thought the chapters that he liked/likes her or at least thinks of her as a girl. That being said, I do want to see Yuu's pov of this whole situation.

Hmm, when Yami and Yuu were in the restaurant, Yuu mentions he wants to "catch up to Hikari". I think it's up to debate whether or not he liked her at that point, but I usually don't think that someone would do the lingo with some random person just because they couldn't get into the same school as their crush. And that too, being their first time.

The only person that reads this manga that actually uses their brain.
