girl fuuuuck off goddamn , like I'd like it more if they made it this as a spin-off. Rather than having a different ass series in the middle.

Not going to lie, I know people here hate vanilla, but I enjoy Yami's and Yuu's relationship so far. Really cements why they got so heated in chapter 21 and kissed. But Yami's insecurities are ruining her and tainting her relationship. Just hope that the next chapter is still vanilla.
Tbf if this was about their relationship to begin with, we wouldn't be here hating on this bitch ass couple.

That's uncalled for. The guy has been translating the whole series and it has been solid. Especially with them having it translated and uploaded within 2 hours of release.
It's not solid at all, and speedtls are notorious for being awful most of the time anyways

Not even. Or barely. They met when he was trying to get INTO high school. so they're like 9th graders by the American standard.

As for the series as a whole, meh. If it had started with Yami and Yuu, I'd have enjoyed the series a lot. I still wonder if the author forgot about the "present time" lol. He's spent essentially 2-3 entire VOLUMES on this flashback.
She is a year older than he is but she had to repeat HS 1st year so they are in the same 10th grade but in different high schools. At this point I don't think that Ayami knows Hikari yet.

And it's not a flashback. It's two (and probably three) POVs of the same time period.

They are high school first and second years. In Japan, 1st to 6th grade is elementary, 7th to 9th is middle, and 10th to 12 is high school.
But to get to my point and your question: Yes, Yuu is 15 and Yami is 17.
Except that Ayami had to repeat 10th because of (I think it was) attendance. All three characters are in 10th grade even though Ayami is a year older than the others.

I mean, it objectively is a flashback. We entered into Ayami’s POV in the present, then jumped backwards to the current arc.

Honestly I quite like that there's some drama and plot. I can see why people are upset it didn't stay a no stakes, slice of life comedy of "how can I get him to like me" but I'm still very much entertained.

The tonal shift worked for me but maybe that's because i only stared reading it today so i could immediately just read the next few chapters

I like how the cover for the manga changed to this girl. Not even pretending to be about the childhood friend anymore.
Well it's still about Hikari, this is just the backstory of the two, I'm still thinking Hikari will win in the end.

In the current scene, they are both in 9th grade. And it's a flashback. It's been a flashback since the scene where Hikari found the two kissing. Everything since then was just to add context to why they were kissing.

It's summer. She has already been told she's not going to advance to 11th grade (called the "2nd grade" here) and will be restarting 10th grade the next semester. He has already failed the HS entrance exam which is taken in MS 3rd year (9th grade) in the winter (around February). Here they are in the manga cafe during Golden Week, which is AFTER the school year change.

They've passed into 1st HS year (March/April), her for the second time. They are both 10th graders.

I repeat what I've said ad naseum: this isn't a flashback, not in the literary device sense. This is a new story, set in the same world, with a different protagonist. Hikari is not the only perspective character, she had Volume 1, and Yami has Volume 2. The story is not trying to get to the present, it's telling the story of a broken girl gaining and losing her first love. Who know what volume 3 will be. Maybe it will be Yuu's perspective.
Then this would be better served as another manga entirely, if that's the case. A lot of similar mangas with multiple stories have been divided into multiple parts.

It's not presented as an anthology either and uses some of the same characters.

A pivot to yet another character's "story" in volume 3 will probably only further divide its fanbase. And regardless, I don't think it's pulling this off well. According to some of the other commenters, this seems to be an recurring issue for this author.
