I repeat what I've said ad naseum: this isn't a flashback, not in the literary device sense. This is a new story, set in the same world, with a different protagonist. Hikari is not the only perspective character, she had Volume 1, and Yami has Volume 2. The story is not trying to get to the present, it's telling the story of a broken girl gaining and losing her first love. Who know what volume 3 will be. Maybe it will be Yuu's perspective.
Then this would be better served as another manga entirely, if that's the case. A lot of similar mangas with multiple stories have been divided into multiple parts.

It's not presented as an anthology either and uses some of the same characters.

A pivot to yet another character's "story" in volume 3 will probably only further divide its fanbase. And regardless, I don't think it's pulling this off well. According to some of the other commenters, this seems to be an recurring issue for this author.

And it's not a flashback. It's two (and probably three) POVs of the same time period.
It is a flashback. First 21 chapters were happening in Hikari's and Yuu's second year of high school.
In here both Yuu and Yami are first years (since Yami had to repeat a year).

Flashbacks involve a character looking back on something that happened in their OWN past, not a POV change that rewinds time. This is being presented from a non-Hikari POV and is being told as current events, not a memory. The only thing that blurs this slightly is Ayami's last page in Ch 21 (which IMO the story would be better with NO explanation of Ayami's past at that point so that we could discover it all ourselves through the storytelling).

Flashback

Definition of a Flashback

In literature, a flashback is an occurrence in which a character remembers an earlier event that happened before the current point of the story. The definition of flashback is identical to that of analepsis, which comes from the Greek for “the act of taking up.” There are two types of flashbacks—those that recount events that happened before the story started (external analepsis) and those that take the reader back to an event that already happened but that the character is considering again (internal analepsis).

I kinda get your point because of the format it is presented in (although the "not-flashback" starts with [It happened a year and a half ago]). But I was arguing more against your statement of
POVs of the same time period.
when they are definitely POVs of different time periods, at least so far.

I hadn't read this manga in a while (before the festival) and decided to catch up today, this is crazy omg 😭

I think there's really interesting character potential and writing, but also the drama of it all is killing me, I feel like I'm watching a novela.

I just want to see what the female main character does because both her best friend and child hood friend both kept this a secret and kissed whilst being invited to the school festival that’s betrayal I’m sure hikari would of gave her blessing but she was lied to …no way hikari will forgive them but it is japan where they love cucking and the characters have zero back bone
