Yami went from codependent relationship with Yuu to codependent relationship w/ her mother b/c apparently that's all her mother ever modeled for her and Yami centering the ship around sex is every "deadbeat mom" in manga, so probably also learned from her mom.
Fair enough. Didn't even thought the implications of Yami's attitude being the result of her mother's actions.
Also, I think Yami centering the relationship around sex, is that she thinks that's a way to 'have someone close to her', you know, she just wanted someone to be on her side. Either eay, is an immature way of seeing a relationship.
Aya seems to be on the way to fixing herself and should do more of that and not fallback into a self-destructive codependent relationship that her and Yuu are too immature to see is unhealthy.
Yeah. While I agree that they should be a couple again, they need to become mature enough to realize the mistakes they did. Let's hope that, in thetime they where separated, they grew up, and can be a NORMAL couple

Where do people get the idea that Hikari was in love with Yuu since forever? It's literally the opposite; Yuu was in love with Hikari since God knows how many years, Hikari only fell in love with Yuu a year before the story starts. Or the first year of highschool. Yami and Yuu got together when Hikari was not interested in Yuu. Outside of being private about his love life, which I believe people have a right to so long as they're not hurting anyone, Yuu did nothing wrong!
Well it's a long story, so sorry if I misremembered when Hikari developed feelings for Yuu.

I never said Yuu did anything wrong, I said he was a coward and I didn't like him. He's a realistic character, and he tried moving on which landed in an unhealthy relationship that he doesn't see as unhealthy. Again, it's realistic and human, but that doesn't mean I have to like him

He knows that Aya comes to the same school Hikari does, he at the very least could've told her that there's a chance he can meet her ex there instead of getting all jittery, but that's short-term.
Long-term, he was having a long and dramatic relationship with somebody while keeping it all secret from Hikari, and Hikari is not just some girl next door to him, and that's ignoring any romantic feelings they had/have for one another.

An ex-girlfriend, who's also her best friend whom Yuu was fucking while Hikari was being all flowery or something. The shit's messy, for Hikari, that is baggage. Had Yuu and Hikari met as strangers, Yuu having an ex wouldn't be a problem, but with the situation as is, this is gonna complicate their relationship too much.
This is only a problem if he knew they were friends and from what I know he didn't. I just cant fathom Yuu having a gf as something Hikari needed to know , especially because at that point in time she didn't like him and just thought of him as a friend/brother and its seems they weren't talking much compared to now in HS.

Why is she the cause of the divorce?
Did I miss something in the previous chapters?
Very clearly stated in ch27, but it's not really her fault - but we blame ourselves as kids. She simply told her mother all about her dad's multiple affairs, knowing her mother's personality and how she'd react. Which is always the objectively correct decision to do anyway, but watching your family split and break because of your own actions as a teenager easily causes them to blame themself.

While Yuu is under no obligation to disclose anything about his personal life to Hikari, my impression of their relationship is that they are supposed to be cordial friends to one another. You say "brother"? That's pretty damn close, if you consider somebody with whom you have no familial ties a "brother", this implies high level of trust, and one'd be hurt if someone you see this way hid an important part of their life from them.
But the original point was that Hikari should distance herself from Yuu and not get involved with him anymore because of his alleged misgivings. Him actively chosing to hide stuff from her is one of said misgivings, and "they are not that close to confide in one another despite the long history of their friendship" would be another nail in this coffin.

I already forgot the main character. :notlikethis:
What do you mean? She is the main character.

As Me412 said, Ayami IS one of the main character. Easiest proof is the cover art. We started off with Hikari in the first volume; and as her name meant 'light', it was all sunshine and rainbows... to the point everyone was thinking this is a vanilla romcom. Then the rug-pull of volume ending and transition into Ayami's arc -- the darkness as her name implies -- come at everyone unexpectedly.

We should be in this arc not too long anymore after this, I think. I estimate we'll have around 10 chapter left in this volume so we have to converge back to the festival evening very soon or we don't have enough pages for the aftermath to unfold. We probably get Yuu's arc next volume.

I continue to be baffled by comments on this thing. Like, on one hand I get it, but on the other hand, I no longer do, because we're now into people calling Yami a homewrecker like... dudes, there's not that much of this manga to misunderstand.

So first part: from Hikari's point of view, she details how she's just started to fall in love with her long-time childhood friend. They are not together. They have never been together. She didn't even see him as someone to be interested in until about the year this manga takes place. Notable events include: a younger girl getting attached to Yuu, only for him to say he loves someone he met before he ever met the younger girl, something Hikari takes as meaning he's in love with her. Hikari talking about love to herself while engaging in small talk with Yuu when they're walking home. Hikari reading interest and love out of Yuu's interactions with her and when he's around others with her. A festival confession scene, where Yuu talks about how he never felt like he could ever match up with her. School festival invitation things, where she pressures him to go to her school even though he really doesn't want to. Then the Yami-sempai kiss.

Now the second part, which we all should remember. An intense romance between a girl from a broken home and a boy with normal aspirations, where his straightforward nature cuts through her gloomy worldview and lets her feel again. It gives her a place to belong. He loves her, she loves him. He gives her the strength to stand up to her sexually abusive stepdad, to go to school again, to not try and do compensated dating because she already feels worthless. To let her believe that she can be a normal person, have a normal life, take ownership of her future. She gives him the confidence and belief that he can do what he puts his mind to, that he's not some doofus who can't do anything right. They improve each other. It's storybook. But we knew it ended when we came in, now we know why. SHE broke it off. Because the courage he gave her backfired. Her mother was angry at her that she revealed all the terrible shit her stepfather was doing. Tried to commit suicide, blames her for that, too. Yami gave up. Decided she is unworthy of being loved and will never be anyone other than a failure of a daughter.

Right, summary out of the way. You noticing something? That maybe the person Yuu was talking about when he said he was in love wasn't Hikari at all, but Yami? That maybe the romantic tension Hikari was always feeling was her own, and all the things she read into Yuu's expressions and words were just her thoughts? That he has actually come to terms with the idea that he wanted to beat Hikari in something, and that's why that's what he chose to tell her, instead of it being some sort of matrix dodge of his true feelings? That Yuu didn't want to go to her school because he KNOWS Yami's there, and he doesn't know how to face her after what happened?
That Hikari's chapters might have been from the perspective of a losing childhood friend? Kinda fuckin' looks like that now, doesn't it? We've all watched this shit happen before.

The short chapters and focus on the female leads, rather than the male one, make this interesting. The medium and perspective have elevated the story and made its turns unpredictable and feel fresh. But it's shown its hand, man. The first part was "what do you mean its a little late" and the second part was "oh shit I guess it was huh." Now we see how it shakes out.

This shit ain't high art how are you all missing the plot points you've seen a thousand times. It's just from another direction!

yeah i understand why people saw Yami as a red flag but i never understand why Yuu is also being called one lol. Like i get maybe him suddenly moving on even though his goal was to catch Hikari is not ideal but thats hardly a red flag when you consider the reason why he does move on.
That's not it for me, It's the fact that he kept secrets to the point that she just had that kiss happen in front of her when she thought he was both single and in to her, and maybe he is, we don't know. He keeps all his shit so close to the vest around her that when it does come out it blows up in everyone's face.

Just dark enough, but without being overly explicit either, to get the message across that she did something really fucked up to get her parents to divorce.

Sometimes, what we don't see is scarier.
I don't think it's suggesting she did something to get them to divorce but more like they are divorcing because she told her mother about the sexual abuse and as a result the already convoluted relationship her parents had got a lot worse.
The whole process took an inmense toll on the mother's mental health, this lead to her eventually blaming and punishing Ayami which in turn got her run away from home.

While I like the manga and I really have no issues with what has been done so far, I do agree that there are pacing issues, not because the writing itself is bad but because it's not adapted to the release rhythm and chapter length. If we had new longer releases at a slower pace I think it would be better, idk if it'd have avoided the backlash but I certainly think I'd enjoy it more.

Usually every manga chapter is it's own complete product, even if it figures as a small part of a bigger story, but in this case it's like getting the complete product in pieces at a pretty slow pace. I don't like how people call this writing trash, admittedly it's far from being good relative to bi-weekly manga standards and needs but's also really far from being trash. I think I'll put this on hold until more chapters release so that I can read as much as I can on one go.
