I've been arguing they're terrible for each other since the they were dating chapters, but a big part of it was the communication mismatch. Were this a "people growing" manga, Yuu and Aya have been made painfully aware of their very different communication styles, and Hikari is pushing 'em to break down their walls, so optimistically they could learn their lesson and actually get better at talking to each other.
Yeah even if they did try working through their communication issues to be together I also think that even then they have too much of there own shit to work through (ESPECIALLY Yami)

As I said it'd be difficult for Hikari and Yuu since he has his own shit to work through but I think she could probably do alot to help him- but now imagine Yami and Yuu's dysfunctional asses both trying to work through there own shit, learning to completely change how they communicate with each other AND keeping a relationship together after everything that happened

I am somewhat skeptical that this is that sorta manga though.
Neither do I it's just TOO MUCH to work through imo for Yuu and Yami to have anything resembling a healthy relationship at least for AWHILE

I'm now going in hard on her playing hero. Like she befriended Yuu when he was at his most pathetic (isolated, sad), just like Aya, & I'm thinking she maybe fell for him when he was peak lost shell shocked why did she break up w/ me? Which even if he didn't talk to her about, Hikari seems to kinda pick up on Yuu's moods.
Yeah true lol

Especially for Yuu I honestly think if he was more open about his feelings and problems with her she'd do basically everything she could to help him

Aya thinks this means Yuu doesn't care about her. (ETA: not that I think he was wrong here, just that it can be complicated).
After the breakup this definitely worked against him, although before I think she appreciated his tact.

Not really - Yami pries until it makes her feel insecure and then shuts it down. (Which honestly should have maybe been a clue to her communication style).
I was recalling a quote from novel ch26 where she said "At first, I used to pry. Asked him all kinds of questions, mostly just to tease him. But now, I don't bring her up anymore. Not her, not their time together, not even the middle school they went to or the rough area she lives in." Implying he avoided answering, so she eventually stopped poking him. On the other hand, she just got done bringing up Hikari earlier in the conversation for him to dance around, so maybe she's not the most reliable source.

I read that as Hikari starting to act more and more on her new feelings.
Yeah that'd also make sense lol

Yeah, I was expecting that when this POV volume started. Maruto probably decided against it because the goal always was to cover the heartbreaks, and including extra stuff would overextend the spin-off. But this is again why I'm glad this is just an extra content to fill in some gaps, not the main manga/novel. A romance story needs to picture the moment, and this is not being done here.
Yeah you make a good point all of this does feel very supplemental- it's nice and it gives extra context but it's nothing THAT new

But it definitely helps tide over till the main series resumes and gives us stuff to keep discussing... but I will admit I am getting a little tired of them I R E A L L Y wanna see stuff that properly moves the story forward it's been almost two months lmao

Yuu’s Chapter – Chapter 4: No More Love...

A few days after that “fateful day.”
The high school entrance exam results—or rather, the failure announcement day.

…And then, one more dawn later.

Yuu: “Uh, um… Yami-senpai…”
Yami: “What? Already back on your feet? That’s youth for you, Yuu~”
Yuu: “That’s not what I mean… And hey, I’m only a year younger than you.”

Me and her… Yami-senpai—unbelievably—became that kind of relationship on just our second meeting.

From early morning, wrapped in each other’s arms in a hotel bed.
Spending an unbelievably intense time together.

For me, it was one shocking experience after another—like my whole world had been turned upside down.

Yami: “Hmm? For someone saying that, something’s been poking my butt for a while now. And it’s hard.”
Yuu: “Wha—?!”
Yami: “Idiot, don’t panic over that. That’s exactly the kind of thing that makes you seem like a virgin.”
Yuu: “I’m not a virgin anymore…”
Yami: “Right, ‘cause I took it from you.”
Yuu: “…Yeah.”
Yami: “Heh.”

Right in front of me was her pale, slender back.
Even when I held her shoulders, she didn’t show the slightest hint of annoyance.
On the contrary, when I kissed her shoulder and buried my face in the nape of her neck, she only let out a ticklish little laugh.

In that moment… no, in every memory since then—
Yami-senpai always had such a wonderful scent.

For someone like me, who could never get close enough to another girl—Hikari—to even notice her scent, it was the first time I’d ever experienced the fragrance of a woman.

…Well, with her, I had countless other “firsts” too.
But even now, more than her face, more than her voice, maybe what I remember most is that scent.

Yuu: “So, um… what I wanted to ask was…”
Yami: “What?”
Yuu: “This isn’t… just a whim, right?”
Yami: “……”
Yuu: “Like… once we’ve gotten over this, you’re not just gonna…”
Yami: “Don’t worry. Whenever you’re in the mood, I’ll let you do it again~”
Yuu: “That’s not what I mean, not in some casual way like that…”

She comforted me with her whole body after I lost what was basically my first gamble in life.
And she let out her own sadness and pent-up feelings, too.

Yami: “Yeah… I’ll keep being your convenient woman, always.”

We were both people who’d been hurt…
No, putting my pain on the same level as hers would be disrespectful to her.

Yami: “So… let’s exchange IDs, Yuu…”

Even so, back then, I truly believed we connected.
Not just in body, but in heart as well.

…Or so I thought, anyway.

…………

…………

Yuu: “The fireworks festival’s tomorrow, how’s your schedule?”
Yuu: “Yami-senpai, where are you right now?”
Yuu: “Is something wrong? Did I do something?”

My LINE message history with her ends right there.
And she didn’t even read my last message.

That’s how, after about half a year, my connection with Yami-senpai was suddenly severed.

I really thought—this time—it was love that had come true.
I thought, for the first time, my feelings had been returned.

I still have no idea what I did to touch Yami-senpai’s nerve.
And at this point, finding out what circumstances or changes of heart she might have had would be nearly impossible.

Of course, it’s not like I just passively accepted being dumped one-sidedly.

After summer break ended, I went several times to the train station nearest her school—Hikari’s school, too—but I never saw her.

Once, I even spotted Hikari and hid in a panic, but in the end, I never caught sight of that distinctive braided hair—or of the short-haired figure she must have become.

From autumn through winter, after we lost contact, I kept turning it over in my mind.

Day after day, I replayed every single word I’d ever said to her.
I dragged up every word, every reaction, every expression she’d ever shown me, from the depths of my memory.

And that only made the sadness and longing worse.

Because, in my memories, Yami-senpai had always been into it.
She had always responded to me.

When we talked, she’d smile at me.
When she teased me, she’d smile even more.

In bed, she’d show me that bittersweet look.
Gradually, she’d started to react to my clumsy moves.
There were even times she’d arch her back and climax.

Was all of that… just my misunderstanding?
Are they telling me it was all just her “skilled” acting?

But for what purpose…?
I just couldn’t figure it out.

So when winter passed and spring came,
I decided to forget everything.

Because the more I remembered, the more it just hurt.

She had already quit school.
We had no remaining points of contact—there was no way to meet her again.

I forced myself to believe that every trace of our connection had disappeared.

Because… I’d had enough.
I decided to stop liking people—stop liking girls.

Just because you have feelings for someone doesn’t mean they’ll be returned.
In fact, the odds are close to impossible.

If you’re good at building relationships, maybe a single failure wouldn’t even faze you.
If you can move on without dwelling, maybe you can just keep falling in love again and again.

But I’m not like that.

I probably don’t even know what it’s like to be rewarded.
And in the worst way possible, I’m the kind of person who can’t forget.

Neither Hikari nor Yami-senpai—
I still haven’t been able to turn either into a fond memory.
I’ve never once been able to think, “I’m glad I fell in love. Even if I was rejected, I can let go.”

I just keep dragging it out, regretting it, getting disgusted with my own weakness, hating myself for it.

So I won’t chase anymore.
I won’t cling.
Not “giving up”—forgetting.

I’ll lighten my heart, thin out my relationships, and just live.
After three brutal heartbreaks, you can’t help but learn that lesson.

Come to think of it, there was an old song titled “I Won’t Fall in Love Again.”

I’ve never actually heard it, but I’ll live by that feeling.
I’ll go through my days without letting anything shake my heart—
without feeling… no, without allowing myself to feel.

…………

…………

But you know, there’s actually more to that phrase…

After “I won’t fall in love again,”

it’s followed by,

“is something I’ll never say.”

I didn’t learn that until after the new year, when spring had come…

Hikari: “Oh, Ta~kun, welcome back.”
Yuu: “Hikari… if you’re here, turn the light on.”
Hikari: “Mmm… what time is it?”
Yuu: “Four-thirty. More importantly, I’m about to get changed…”
Hikari: “Oh, don’t mind me~”
Yuu: “I do mind… whatever, just don’t peek, okay?”
Hikari: “What’s the point now? If I were gonna peek, I’d have been doing it since middle school.”

It was around the time when, for some reason, the distance between me and Hikari began to close again—
for the third time.

Yeah… I don’t really think it took on a more mature tone. And I don’t think Yuu’s relationship with Yami actually made him mature.

Insight:

The biggest thing about this chapter is that Yuu actually went looking for Yami after she ghosted him. Also, calling his heartbreaks “three brutal heartbreaks” feels a bit exaggerated, at least when you consider the first two with Hikari. But I get it; that is how a young guy might see things, so it does not really bother me. Still, yeah, this definitely is not doing Yuu’s image any favors.
Thanks for the reminder
I think this chapter shows well that yuu actually cared for aya and from the previous chapter he does like hikari he actually tries but he gives up too easily after he fails he's one of the characters I would say who's not good but not bad either he means well but he just ends up in unfortunate circumstances and messy situations sympathetic I'd say unlucky i understand the hate but he deserves a second chance maybe in the future chapts in the third arc we'll see some character development and redemption from his side but for now we just have to wait

I think this chapter shows well that yuu actually cared for aya and from the previous chapter he does like hikari he actually tries but he gives up too easily
I mean to be slightly fair at this point he'd had feelings for Hikari for YEARS and not only did she show no signs of having feelings for him but DIDN'T have any feelings for him
after he fails he's one of the characters I would say who's not good but not bad either he means well but he just ends up in unfortunate circumstances and messy situations
Yeah you're not wrong the biggest flaw with him is it severe lack of self confidence and how wishy washy he is

But he's a teen it's hard to judge him too harshly for something like that
sympathetic I'd say unlucky i understand the hate but he deserves a second chance maybe in the future chapts in the third arc we'll see some character development and redemption from his side but for now we just have to wait
Yeah I genuinely don't remotely see him being past redemption

The only really shitty thing he did was lie to Hikari

He really just needs to learn to be honest and open with those he loves like Hikari

Hell she'd 100% try helping him honestly

I think he means the one where yuu tries to search for aya but really tho has he been a creep if anything he's the last person to be a creep I mean he's always quite reserved and doesn't want to bother people typa person ?
I mean...seems pretty understandable to me... she ghosted him that's 100% on her imo

These chapters have been pretty much useless in terms of fleshing out Yuu's character. It's just snippets from some key moments of the story and nothing else. Nothing new. They are useless. Yuu is still a prop. Not an individual. You literally give zero fucks about him. It's like reading about a coat hanger in your wardrobe. No one gives a fuck because there is no reason to. I was expecting a proper characterization not this... whatever this is.

So this is what it looks like if you were to look in to the inner workings of a self-insert harem protagonist. Even their lives equally resolves around the love interests and nothing else. Maruto is starting to fail on the over all theme. Why anyone would care about these people? Yuu is an empty shounen romcom MC, Yami is a self destructive dumbfuck (though she has being abused as an excuse) and Hikari is a shoujo romcom FMC (equally worthless).

Finally, damn, someone who understands the reasons why Yuu didn't want to take a step in drowning, he knew he had no chance, and if he confessed his feelings they would ruin their friendship, daaahhh it seems like nobody understands
That's been pointed out a lot of times before. Even by the story itself. If people are still saying that shit, its on them. You can't fix ignorance.

"I went several times to the train station nearest her school"

Doing this once, maybe even a few times would've been normal. Several? Yeah, I don't know man.
Yeah gonna be real don't see how this is creepy when she's the one who ghosted him

If anything 100% Yami's fault especially since he basically did nothing to deserve it so he had no idea what was happening it makes complete sense he'd try finding her basically the only way he'd potentially know how

Also several litterally just means "more than two but not many" all it really tells us it was more than one

plus this is putting ALOT of faith in a chatGPT translation honestly

As someone else pointed out these are filler chapters not part of the main story technically so it makes sense, they're not very important or reveal much this is probably what we should have expected

So this is what it looks like if you were to look in to the inner workings of a self-insert harem protagonist. Even their lives equally resolves around the love interests and nothing else.
I mean...it's litterally giving his history about his feelings for Hikari and Yami so like...yeah these chapters center around his love life lmao

Maruto is starting to fail on the over all theme. Why anyone would care about these people? Yuu is an empty shounen romcom MC, Yami is a self destructive dumbfuck (though she has being abused as an excuse) and Hikari is a shoujo romcom FMC (equally worthless).
Yuu has gotten barely any proper POV (since as someone pointed out these are recollections in side chapters) but I will agree he's in desperate need of them

Yami is very explicitly meant to be a complete fucking mess of a human being to contrast Hikari is a borderline

And saying "Hikari is a shoujo romcom FMC" doesn't make much sense as a critism since this LITTERALLY started as a romcom and is litterally meant to be a direct contrast to Yami that's kinda the point lol

Honestly the actual problem is the pacing- bi weekly is already pretty damn rough for a series like this but it's only exemplified by the fact it's been on hiatus since mid june

When is the manga coming back tho?
I don't think we know yet but if I had to guess? We'll probably get one more side chapter then back to main releases

Comiket is set for next weekend, August 16–17, so I’m guessing we’ll get one more Yuu chapter on the 25th, with the main story returning in September.
This feels about right so they're probably putting a new main chapter out on September 7th I'd say?

Hopefully the next main side chapter has at least a little something extra going on- hasn't been much to talk with these except a little bit in the first chapter and this one

I'm putting in my guess for the next one being a chapter telling the moment he fell back in love with Hikari (really wanna see this honestly)

It depends. In my opinion based on my experience with this type of story, if when the main story resumes it has a timeskip where characters avoided each other for a while I think Yami chances are looking rather grim, but if they go straight into the drama things could go either way.

The reason I think this is because it changes who's the active character who's gonna be trying to change things, if we go into a timeskip the other two will be the ones will be likely chasing after Hikari and she's by far the one with the smaller sins, and taking her trust back would go through admitting mistakes and making amends. This makes it hard to write the other couple happening. But if Hikari is the one chasing the other two and seeking conciliation things get way more complex because she's throwing herself in the mud with them.

I find it a little questionable that Yuu went only with "I did something wrong" assumption. Of course the situation is a black box to him since Yami didn't say a single word to him, but he knows a little about her family situation and he also felt she was happy with him

From autumn through winter, after we lost contact, I kept turning it over in my mind.

Day after day, I replayed every single word I’d ever said to her.
I dragged up every word, every reaction, every expression she’d ever shown me, from the depths of my memory.

She had always responded to me.

When we talked, she’d smile at me.
When she teased me, she’d smile even more

So why not consider that it could be something unrelated to him? Like her family found out she stole some money to pay for the beach trip (I don't think he bought into "coupons" stuff) and locked her in or something.
I know it makes sense for Yuu to assume it's because of him due to his low self-esteem. But it would also make sense for him to worry about her, because he doesn't even know if she's all right or not, especially with his conclusion that she dropped out of the school.

I guess that’s what happens when you try to blend characters who inherently belong to different narrative tones, especially when using an abrupt, unhinted twist to shift the story’s genre. Hikari fits a lighthearted story, while Yami belongs in a drama-heavy one. Yuu is supposed to be the bridge between the two, but he comes across as leaning more toward Yami’s dramatic tone, leaving Hikari feeling out of place.
