Something must be fucked up in the editing industry or something, but since about 2020, it feels like every romance comedy manga requires at least 1 “second girl”.

Either she’s used as a sacrifice for progress or just an annoying fly to constantly buzz around and get in the way of progress. But it’s just a replacement of a good writing .
bro i don't understand either, i've been looking for a rom-com without a second girl and i just couldn't find it. can anyone give me one

Add Aketsu and Yancha and that's pretty much it. I hate the needless drama it brings. I want Romance Comedy in my Romance Comedy and having multiple love interests isn't easy to write, and it almost always comes down to the "Second Girl" being more aggressive and forcing the "Main Girl" to step up. I blame Komi San for destroying any enjoyment I had of this trope by having the famous Fake Out "Second Girl Wins" then a week later taking it all back. I just got sick of having issue after issue dedicated to nothing but fluff, it's romantic filler before the "Main" couple actually has progress.

And I'm not talking about Harem Manga's, that's important to note, but Romance Comedies with a single focal point(usually with the girls name in the freaking title). Then around issue 10-20 the author or editor has to jam in the "Second Girl" and all the fun charming one on one moments fade away. It happens every... single... time... The exceptions are not the rule.

Even stuff like Boku teased the blonde for a couple of arcs but made her a good friend/wingman. But Nagatoro has TWO annoying second girls with the Student Body President and her sister who love to strip naked for no reason. And don't get me started on "Broken Childhood friend" and needless drama, it went Gal Cleaning on us and added a r*pe subplot which ruined the series for me. I still think about that cup shaking in her hands almost a month later, hate it.
idk, i didn't mind the student body president as much. the fact that she was such a clear foil to nagatoro in every way made her more interesting than the average "second girl". wholeheartedly agree with you on gal cleaning tho, what a fucking mess lmao

I'm a little disappointed at Eiji not doing enough to get out of Hikari's grasp, but I'm proud of Aoi for standing up to her rival like I wanted to see. Eiji should try harder to shake that thieving cat off of him and not keep playing into her hands. Being that he's engaged and in a loving relationship, he shouldn't be letting random girls cling onto him so easily.

Lightly speaking, this is a rehash of the previous arc with gender roles reversed, the difference being Shigeru never got the chance to get physically close to Aoi like Hikari is doing with Eiji here.

I mean, 95% of all manga, whether it's romcom, isekai or whatever else is just taking the exact same formula that the author and editor has seen worked well previously, modify some small details and pushing it out. And it generally works. It won't win any big awards, but it'll sell. So I feel like you could say "it's just a replacement for good writing" about almost every trope in almost every manga.
