I've heard a lot of people talk about how it was a terrible cast for a multitude of reasons. I personally started and still watch it in sub, but I honestly don't see how it's terrible? However, I do understand why people agree with it being a bad casting. What do you think?
First, I don't know which dub you're talking about. I assume it's the English dub.
But there have been instances where in the past where an anime was officially subbed and dubbed by two different companies with two different scripts, and I liked one of them, and hated the other.
I don't know and don't care about the drama, the politics, or whatever it is out there that makes you so curious that you're prompted to asked here.
But since you asked, so here's my take from the first 2 netflix dub version.
voice:
it's fine. I think her voice matched the vibe of the character. It's not as pitchy as the Japanese VA, so she did sound older at times, but it's fine.
acting:
well this is complicated, because anime are tailored for overly melodramatic and cringe-inducing Japanese acting and conversations, especially in this one.
So, trying to perfectly match it one-to-one to Japanese acting isn't always the best approach, in my opinion.
Which is exactly what the dub tries to do here.
But then again, I think the end result is fine. She did good in fact.
She did elevate the cringy-ness by trying to make everything pitchy and sound higher, but I think that's normal. It's anime.
Tho, I did find that her pitchy voice made almost all other VAs sound much better and more natural than her.
So all in all, no, I don't think it's terrible.
Granted, I no longer watch that many dub since high school, but so far I didn't find the script or acting to be particularly outrageous.
I like the manga, I like romance manga, I have two volumes of it, but I don't put it to such an amazing admiration as others.
I only give it a 7 on my list.
I think the anime is beautiful, really pretty, animation is great, VAs are good.
I just don't like slow and overly melodramatic anime. And this one is just didn't hit me in the right place.
It's just a 6 on my list.
