Should mention "sister-in-law", is wrong, if she is an orphaned child taken in by a family, that would make her an adopted sister or a foster sister. Sister-in-law is only possible if she is the sister of MC's wife or is the wife of MC's sibling, both of which is unlikely given the character ages even if it is a fantasy setting

I think someone just took the first translation of Giri 義理 (and their gi- variants like Gimai, Gibo) as in-law and ran with it. A proper translation would probably “by-law” or “by ceremony” (or more literally, by obligation). Gibo 義母 for example is recognized as stepmother, mother-in-law and adoptive mother (which is also alternatively known as Youbo 養母).

edit: for some reason I keep reading 義理 as gishi....
