It looks like the main character knows he doesn't have too long left, that's heartbreaking.

I'm happy at least he's getting to meet some of his friendly encounters again.

By charging more to those well-off, he can feed those who aren't treated as well by life.
However, in practice, this isn't exactly the best idea... Those who understand will surely come back and continue to pay high prices. However, those who do not understand or who simply do not care, especially since the impoverished seem to be mostly made up of the demon race, will likely never come back or perhaps even make trouble.

It's also, like another person said, an arbitrary system. How do you know if a person is or is not well-off? A bad actor could easily come in for a free meal pretending to be someone whose luck in life is down. There is not much accountability on the owner of the place to make sure of this.

Furthermore, by charging lower prices to the impoverished (which, again, is made up mostly of demons from what I can tell), isn't this contributing more towards the divide between humans and demons? Especially if the ones who feel they've been ripped off are military officers or guards... Isn't that dangerous?

Rather than forcing such a thing onto his customers, it would probably be better to simply ask for a 'contribution'. Those mages, for example, would probably help a lot. Altruism works best when everyone is on the same page. Perhaps it's best if he creates a separate area specifically for those who aren't well-off so that they can have a meal while feeling safe.
Doing good things is difficult unless you don't really care about incurring the indirect, bad side-effects of what you're doing...

Those who don't understand? Why wouldn't they understand a sign or the owners simple explanation? Also, nobody would make trouble at such a vital place for sustenance and respite. I mean hell, the demon lord and badass sage of mountains just came by. They're the biggest security this place has outside of the many regular folk who depend and attend this place.

Also the arbitrary system is fine cus he's dying in like, a year anyways. He isn't wanting for money as far as we know. He likely isn't undercharging the poor and is simply overcharging those who are well off. If he were undercharging the poor, he would need a lot of well of customers to balance his profits, and I frankly doubt he's getting a lot of rich customers out here in bum fuck nowhere (outside a couple exceptions). also who in their right mind would try to pass off as poor just for a cheap meal here in the frontier? that puts them at risk of getting mugged or permanently banned from the establishment if caught. ALSO he put up a sign saying to talk to him if there's trouble paying, so it's literally no big deal.

This isn't contributing to a divide between races, because I'm sure the demon king also got upcharged. not to mention that the poor folk get to live easier by not having to pay as much, meaning they aren't playing catch up to those well off (human or otherwise.)

The contribution idea is fine if it were in addition to what's already in place. people hate to tip AND charity is far from an ideal way to secure a consistent profit. I mean look at the drunk hero, he definitely wouldn't have paid his due. also the seperate area for the poor??? didn't you just argue against the divide of the humans and demons?? this idea is literally segregation????

tbh I don't really have a problem with any of these points except for the fact that you say that it's segregation. I specifically meant that I would like to see a safer area for the more downtrodden people who would like to come for a free meal. This applies to all races. Some people feel very ashamed at the prospect of getting a free meal when they're down on their luck. You're right that this might exacerbate things though. I understand if you're getting heated but I'm human just like you, no need to be so aggressive. I'm not a policy maker and I just wanted to put in my two cents as a meager person on the internet.
