I can see my reflection well at night?!?!?!
Just look in a regular mirror while holding a regular old oil lamp (in the other hand)?????

The author sometimes really seems to think that being low on the tech tree = being actual morons. And I know it's probably always been like that, but these "locals flabbergasted" gags have been getting more and more aggravating and unbearable to me. Dinoso easily became my number 1 most despised character in the manga with this shit. At least Letze's "normie scared of spirit stuff in general" angle is not that inherently shitty and still enjoyable.

Honestly the gag lost all of its meaning half way through the series, especially when they learned he was from another world

I believe it's more to do with the tech involved. The glass that's used in this world isn't really that transparent, and it's expensive and rare hence the Window Tax. (Chapter 15 pg 2, Chapter 28 pg 17) And the tech for mirrors is probably just as bad, probably heavily distorted, even if you can find a good silversmith. You can see your reflection easily in the daytime in water. But at Night, is a different matter.

Not to say you are wrong, we ourselves had polished metal mirrors thousands of years ago. But if you havent noticed, much of their technology advancements are being hampered by war and a constant shifting of the greater spirits. The fantasy aspects of this setting is actively retarding their technology.

Whole environments shift every thousand year or so, like the river Es changing course and an entire region going from a tropical rainforest to scorching desert in less then a generation. In the last couple thousand years, the controlling greater spirit has changed three or four times. Each one has brought major upheaval to every corner of their world.

So you can't really compare the technological advances of our two civilizations. Ours has progressed at a fairly stable rate with only a few setbacks, while their entire world is in flux. So if it isn't monsters causing havoc, it's the heroes causing widespread disasters, or it's a willfully idiot without a single cent of restraint thatstraight up asks a river goddess to change the path her river follows.Dumps treasure grade weapons in the laps of his friends

How does glass come into this? For oil lamps? They work perfectly fine without any, just take a typical aladdin genie lamp style oil lamp with a wick. Or are you talking just about the low level of the tech tree in general? Still shouldn't prevent something as simple as polished metal and a open flame oil lamp.

Well that's just an explanation for why they're low on the tech tree, but that wasn't my issue at all. Sure, they're low tech, I accept that, my issue is how they're being stupid, seemingly because they're low lech, which is nonsense.

Dinosso is surprised because he can see his reflection clearly, even though he sees it through the glass lamp.

The glass that Jean made is thinner and crystal clear, which is never heard of. Butler said he never seen glass so transparent and wanted to buy it on the spot since the typical glass they had even the high quality one are ashy(?) And had yellowish/ greenish tint.

Even the mirror is different since Jean made it using modern technique so the reflection is cleaner and bright

I wonder whether the MC will clashed with his sister eventually or not.
Even on the newest chapter that I read he still not meet with them

One of the reason is the sister doesn't want too leave too far from the kingdom since its inconvenience for them. The typical transportation is using ship or carriage but both are unsatisfying and far from comfortable for the sister's taste. Wich is a win for Jean

The closest one is Jean doppelganger, doll-kun, using a fae path to go to where the spirit are and eating them, probably for preserve his power/body and Jean tried his best to close every fae path that doll-kun is using.

But they never meeting each other, Jean really carefull to make sure that none of the heroes know he is exist.

A lamp without the glass can go out with a light breeze. Controlling the airflow can also change flame shape and greatly preserve oil for a given level of brightness. Though that lamp appears to be a type meant for use indoors so wind putting it out isn't a concern, still the brightness of that lamp will be far greater. It will also reduce the amount of soot released, as the longer flame will burn the oil more completely.

But you'd still be perfectly able to see your reflection at night. That wouldn't be anything even remotely impressive.

I was just explaining the importance of the glass. The mirror is, iffy, not only as something to surprise them, as oil lamp reflectors usually aren't even meant to be flat, they are typically curved or have some shape to them to either focus or spread the light. So I'm not trying to argue that their reaction is appropriate. I do understand that polishing things to a mirror finish is stone age tech, and that when it was the stone age the mirrors were made of stone, such as obsidian. These people should be able to polish the various metals they have to a mirror finish to produce high quality mirrors.

And it's readily apparent you conflate ignorance with a lack intelligence. They are not stupid because they are awed by simple devices. It is simply that their society as a whole is just that primitive.

Magic has allowed them to maintain their civilization, but the technical skills required to make even simple devices has been lost in the chaos. A good example is the distant nation that specializes in pottery and constructs made out of clay. Before Jean advanced their techniques, they just didn't have the institutional nowledge to craft thin walled flushable toilets and bathtubs light enough to be transported.

The same can be said of Jean's oil lamps. It's not that the dwarves couldn't or haven't produce a similar device, only that because they are one of the very few craftsmen that even remember how to do so, only high nobles have even seen one, let alone that they exist at all.

So again, the inhabitants of this world are not stupid, they are just very ignorant about non-magical technology. And even that is severely lacking. They have been constantly smashed back to the age of iron and only maintain any level of society thrue the use of spirit magic and a constant influx of knowledge from summoned individuals.
