It's from the first dungeon where he had a stick and was giddy with it until it broke and has been talking about getting one that won't break.

Most will feel like a side quest, but dude is determined to stay away from the heroes, explore and eat exotic stuff. There is a main plot line but main boss is well hidden and truly acting behind the scenes, don't expect a demon lord to show up and start narrating some world domination scheme.

This is a general issue in the WN too, plus an almost total lack of segues between chapters and sometimes within arcs as well. On the other hand you don’t get the same infos regurgitated every single chapter either that plagues WNs and LNs.
Offtopic rant
The worst offender I’ve encountered in that regard is Barbarian Reincarnation where you get told every major non-human character’s race in every single chapter. I had to drop that one because of that. Could make a drinking game out of it, but you’d probably conk out after five chapters
