Yep i was thinking exactly this, at some point the mangaka lost the thread completely and stuff just didn't happen anymore, just small slice of life things, lots of side-stories got left unresolved, absolutely nothing was developed of the romance.

In fact, the main girl barely appeared in the last half or more of the manga, and when she did it was just some cameo at best.
