Also, why is it a mana kidney? It does not sound like it serves the same function as a kidney.

The mana organ is probably just kinda kidney shaped. Before modern medicine people had no idea what the fuck the kidney did, in this fantasy world the "mana kidney" probably got it's name from it's form, not function.
