1) Balud is playing Assassin's Creed: Black Flag to win the support of the totally-not-Spanish navy for the pretty second prince.
2) The navy -- flush with the prestige of victory and also having made the bargain with Balud -- will hopefully balance out the army's aggressive politicking in trying to make the child third prince their puppet king of totally-not-Spain.
3) Somewhat confusingly, the navy is working closely on the anti-piracy mission with the admiral of an island kingdom that previously kicked their collective arses, Majorca. Majorca's admiral is the cousin of totally-not-Spain's queen, and therefore Balud is earning the favor of not one, but two kingdoms. And one oji-con admiral.
4) With the navy's support, Balud's kingdom's support, and Majorca's support, pretty boy prince stands a much better of leveling up into pretty boy king.
5) Balud's going through all this trouble because of the mission from King Smugface the Great: make totally-not-Spain a firm and stable ally of Smugface Kingdom. Pretty boy king will have the triple benefit of being a grateful ally; a personal friend of Balud; and wife...uh, husband...to Balud's tomboy friend.
6) King Smugface the Great said something about how he wants to use the solidified alliance to do two things: potentially intervene in another country's civil war (remember the
charmingly thin noble academy girl? She's a refugee noble with a very strong claim to its throne), and to counter that other rival kingdom that attacked Balud early on.
It's a lot of RPG sidequesting ("save the kingdom! but first go gather these mushrooms"). To be fair, he's gaining some very well endowed rewards for his efforts. Hm-mm.
