It is our group's preference. You'll notice that in this manga we have avoided the use of all Japanese honorifics as well, given that the setting is not Japan. We simply adapt the TL for a western audience, where young kids are more likely to address a brother by his first name or a nickname (as in this case).

It's quite possible they called him "Taku-nii", which was then TL'd as Taku here and "Oniichan" in the novel, but I haven't read the novel raws, so I can't say for sure
