Getting well chapters are a bit slow, but sometimes they're a nice change of pace.

"You need to stop that bad habit."
It's a habit guys learn through being constantly belittled and devalued for not being stoic.

"This story is too long!"
We need more characters like her when it comes to flashbacks.

Yeah, he's a bit on the shifty side.

Hmm. Shifty bro is either preparing the purchase document to screw them politically, or is trying to reduce the casualties by playing both sides.

Shifty bro isn't the traitor. My speculation is that the 2nd brother is due to inheritance passing towards the oldest. (But that's not 100%)
Literature/manga/movie logic: Shifty people that are shown to us as shifty from the start are usually the "good" guys. And usually the publically good ones are the bad ones. Overused troupe in my opinion.

My thing is he strikes me as the type who acts irresponsible to be responsible?

Like is position in his family is such that if he acted even sorta reliable Takadono people try to get him to usurp his brothers' positions and/or use him to sow discord. So instead he acts like a lazy ahole who just happens to do stuff like help the family get connected with traders.

Could be, also used quite a lot in many works both in the west and the east.
It's to give a reader a feeling that he is reading a "deeper" work. Where everything is not what it appears to be. (Often it is as you see it, so authors try to go the otherway around to increase the entertainment value).
