Not true; there are MILLIONS of people in the world. Why the hell would they believe that some rando that doesn't even look well off is that super genius businessman???

They already stated that there were tons of frauds trying to get in....

And before he went to them, he was LITERALLY TOLD he needed a recommendation and literally has no evidence of who he is....

Isn't it normal that they hate scammers???

MC is in a new place, gets told he needs a referral and rather than trying to talk to the lady that knows stuff, he goes off on his own and expected results for no reason.

That's just stupid.

You are saying that they are stupid because of a 1/million chance they offend the wrong person... while being a jerk isn't the smartest thing, it's also normal if you are in a high position.... you shouldn't think a person is stupid for having normal human flaws.

I say the MC is stupid because he was TOLD he needed a recommendation and instead of talking to people that could explain things to him, tries to go forward anyways with absolute no way for them to know who he is....

Basically, he knows he doesn't have documentation and yet magically expects results... that's just asking for humiliation....
Your wall of text contains nothing to invalidate what I wrote. You kind of understand the issue, but not the repercussions.

Turning people away is fine, but - as the leader of a group of merchants, you can’t afford to publicly humiliate anyone - under any circumstance. Image is paramount when doing business.

This leads us to that 1/million chance that nobody, in the entirety of that world, wants. As I said, he’s the golden goose - but his ability to provide other worldly things is trivial. You seem to have forgotten granny. If anyone finds out that his guild shit on her grandson nobody will do business with them. Be it fear or out of respect for her, their asses are done.

To be fair, they probably had to deal with a lot of people trying to scam them...

Though I find it weird that he repeatedly tried without a recommendation once he was told the first time....

Like, why does he suddenly not have enough intelligence to actually figure out that he doesn't have any way to properly identify himself??? Why did he not try to wait for the mayor that he knows??? He faced a problem and didn't even try to wait for a person he knew to try and help him.....
Well to be fair, trying at other places is pretty logical, up to a point at least.
There is no guarantee that every place has the same rules.

But eventually yeah, it's odd he never went to ask for one earlier.
however, I do understand the desire to go to and at least investigate the one place that does not require recommendations by Nobles as he still considers himself a common man.

I'm not sure why everyone is ragging on the MC. HE just came from a town without a need for recommendation letters, the mayor he's traveling with said nothing to him about it, and even if he went to the mayor of a small town for help, sure from a much smaller town and he still wouldn't hang the required 3 recommendation letters.

Honestly the system is much more stupid than the MC. It completely discourages innovation. If someone invents or discovers a new product that could revolutionize how things in the world worked how would they get the product out? These merchant guilds aren't giving the time of day. Nobles are even less likely to hear from some random Joe (in this world).

It's a system in place that's just to flaunt power and to stifle others at the sacrifice of innovation.
This is just this "Trade Capitol" though, like with MC's matches they send their pawns out to pick up all the new products from the no name shops and then sell them for massive profits.

how are you suppose to get a recommendation letter from 3 other guilds if you need a recommendation letter just to get in to one? this is like needing 16 years experience for an internship straight out of college.
I saw that on an application for an in-college internship once. Needed ten years experience and a couple degrees of at least Bachelors level to apply.

I thought in the same line before, but then there aren't actually that many places to hit up. If you just want to see if you can get your foot in the door, there's a point in visiting them all.

These things can be insane. Seen things from five years experience as a programmer with some specific software that was only two years old, to having to be 22 years old or younger and have six years experience.

For a supposedly "high" member of society, that gm throwing water had to be unprofessional for dramatic flair. I guess he doesn't care about his reputation getting ruined.

Then again, why can't Shirou just get letters first after he got denied the first time? :pout:

And isn't he the sole supplier of matches? Unless of course he already taught them how matches are made, then he could just monopolize the whole thing and:
  • Oversaturate the market with matches so their price plummets so bad and ruin those merchants who have a huge stockpile of it.
  • Stop supplying matches to merchants until the prices go up then focus on starting a company that sells directly to consumers at better prices, like that pharmacy kid on another manga.
  • Make matches obsolete by introducing lighters and possibly doing point #2.

Realistically, matches shouldn't be that hard to create, especially in a world with functional alchemy, and he's been selling them for a while. It wouldn't surprise me if the larger guilds were already starting to produce their own matches, rather than relying on his imports. It's also worth noting that there are other, low tech, ways to reliably start fires, though the author doesn't seem to be aware of them.

i'd imagine most ppl relied on mages fire magic beforehand but perfect chance/opportunity for him to introduce some other stuff. Or just simply instant ramen/udon/etc which he can buy for like 50 cents each and prolly sell for liek 5 bucks or whatever XD (Well i mean you could prolly charge more depending on how many ppl are addicted but a reasonable price that still makes a profit for him would def get repeat customers)

I know ms mayor forgot in the end to tell mc about the letters he needed, but it still feels like a dick move to not tell him about it enroute to the city
i would think her also showing up with him would be enough unless her town/own reputation wasn't 'good' enough then again they had that festival or whatever so it's not as if Ninorich is a 'middle of nowhere' town that barely has any villagers unless most of its money come from travelers/adventurers staying in their inns or so

He should've just said he was the grandson of the witch and he'll get accepted immediately
I mean, if they didn't believe that he was the original match salesman, claiming to be the grandson of a legendary witch/hero wouldn't work either unless his grandma was by his side too xD

The issue is that it's human nature. You can't expect people to act perfectly. And you realize for most of human history, the rich have almost always looked down on the poor. That's literal normal action that's always existed.

And he only would face consequences if by random chance, the person he offends has a rare chance of getting back at him...

But again, that's like winning the lottery....

Like, if you have to fear that one in a million chance, then you have to apply that logic to life.

You can't eat solid foods because you might choke. You can't walk outside cause a drunk driver could hit you. You can't drive cause you might get into an accident.

It's so rare to the point that it'd actually be dumb to worry about it it.... in this case, it's just bad luck that the rare chance he could f*** up, it happened...

Its a dumb plot for sure but it was that way from chapter 1.
It wasn't fully dumb. A lot of stuff made sense.

Except for when he went on an adventure even though he's supposed to be a merchant.... and he said no to more power even though there is literally no consequence, only benefit and this time when he couldn't even have a little bit of patience to wait for the mayor.....

People seem a tad too fixated on the matches and seem to forget that the MC has tons of ways to make the guilds that shunned him, regret their actions.(as many as there are products on earth)
The shampoo and hair products for one would be a huge hit with the nobles, for example.
Heck a common $1 disposable lighter would seem like an expensive luxury item, that can't really be replicated, because even after you "open" it to check what fuels it, the liquefied gas would evaporate instantly making it seem as it functioned with magic.
