You can only blame the fact they're Sage for this matter I guess.
All Sage doesn't have thing like lifespan if they want to they could even lived for thousands of years,
They absolutely doesn't feel the rush to learn new thing or even the need for it.

In the first place his master didn't teach him anything, all they did the past 500 years is just swinging those wood stick.
The Sage Art is something that come naturally as they aged and become closer with nature, well apparently Sage do able to learn new Art from their fellow Sage to quicken the process to learn but his master doesn't feel the need to teach him that. Even as it is other than the Pandora user who have bad compatibility with him he pretty much destroyed everyone.

Introducing a second isekai character this early is... really bad for any story. Especially another plain one like this. It just means this isekai side character got screwed out of his plot armor because he's in the wrong manga where he loses to a more OP cheat.
