Sansui is staying in the service of Dewey in order to have Rain raised with the advantages of such affluence. That choice seems highly questionable, given the attitudes that may at the same time be inculcated in Rain, but that's his thinking. Within the framework of this story, a sage who is 500 years old and expects to live for very much longer is largely indifferent to the discomforts of dealing with Dewey.
