Eh, I wouldn't call it axed, because all the main culprit already dealt with by that point, extending the story further just made for worse story. This isn't really taking the same plot structure with the other recent manga from this duo, so it's understandably shorter.

It's completely realistic though. So many people can't admit they're wrong even through adulthood. You hear it all the time with bullies where they move past the bullying they performed and their own actions as childish behavior and don't realize it impacted the victim because to them it was nothing which causes the conflict to continue later
