Was this meant to be as fast-paced from the get-go or was there a cancellation scare already? It's chapter 26 and we're already gearing up for the second boss battle.

Don't think this'll get canceled that fast tbh. Esp knowing it entered (and won the 7th place in) the Anime adaptation poll. Pacing most likely this way from the beginning. Once it finishes the main arc, it'll either go for the second arc with a whole new different problem like going for a global, worldwide problems, since there's no way only Japan got this sorcerer-enchanted blade stuff. That or it just ends END.

Yeah that's why I asked, didn't get the sense it was in danger. A lot more manga seem to choose shorter runs in the last few years, might be that.
