Demons = Evokers, Humans = Enchanters.
That is what this comes down to, basically. Everything points to them being exactly the same species but with aptitudes for different types of magic.
And to prove things either way, they'd have to attempt human / demon couples and see if they can produce viable offspring together. If they can't then fine, different species. If they can, then same species.
Still, I can't help but remember that the word typically translated as "demon" in these settings is usually literally "magic race" in Japanese, which carries far different implications than the word "demon" would normally indicate in English.
