The Slimes are to this world what Evees are to Pokémon, the building blocks of creation and their answers lie within their gene code.
I'm guessing the god of Creation (I forget his name) made the slimes quick and dirty and so forgot to limit them, so the only reason they aren't the dominant species is they are too weak in nature.
