I may not be remembering right but that sounds more like the web novel where this fight is basically with an entirely different kind of character which had little to no background. Don't even remember if he had the same name. Or is the LN being translated somewhere too?

I only read the LN, so I can’t make any comparisons. If you’re interested, the LN has an official translation which should be not too hard to find in the usual places.

You lost the point of the nuance in the writing. No one wants you to root for the villain, but the events leading up to this shows that he was more than just your typical, detestable, one dimensional, bad guy. Our MC probably realized this too from the short exchanges they've had, or at the very least developed respect as a fellow warrior of high caliber.

The author has successfully written two antagonists (curly guy and this guy) that I would be proud if I have written them personally. They are pretty rare nowadays and must be cherished.

Nuance doesn't change his horrid crimes or make me sympathetic. Should I weep for a murderer because his puppy died as a kid? Give me a break.
I don't think his back story is bad or anything is poorly written, I just don't care for the MC praising the selfish criminal scum.

The love of scumbag's life died? Why is that now those poor kids' problem? So Ptooee!
