Certainly, you can do without either and just create endless slop, but that just results in making the equivalent of junk food for entertainment. For a work to really stand out, it needs to be quality, and those two traits are very much a mark of quality. Something need not necessarily be "realistic" by our own standards in a fantasy setting, but it should very much be "realistic" by the standards of the setting itself.

TL;DR - a fantasy work doesn't need to be "realistic", but it must be "believable".

All that said, the complaint this time is pretty easy to dismiss. Mental fatigue is just as draining as physical fatigue, and as a heavy introvert myself, I can personally attest to how exhausting a gathering like this can be, especially when you're surrounded by big wigs.
