Also, she was the head of the clan. She had to maintain appearances lest the other family members try and pull something. Her own sister had already been fully indoctrinated; who's to say other members of the family wouldn't have decided to get "proactive" if grandma had been more overt in her actions?
I do agree, altho we still have no confirmation of any sort of infighting within the ebisumori family, other than Yoshie acting against Mutsu's wishes and leaving a guide for Mirai, I think it would've helped to se a bit of that in order for people to better understand Mutsu's position.

Yeah, unfortunately she didn't know how. Her own mother definitely didn't show any examples of how to raise children with love.
If grandma showed her love to her daughter in more open way....
I'm gonna give it to Mutsu, she was better mother to her daughters than her own, despite not knowing how to exactly do that properly. Sure, she did fuck up a lot, but she was essentially trying to break a multiple generations long cycle of abuse and human sacrifice. She genuinely did her best, even if it wasn't enough.

Despite all the horror, curse, and student's family issue
Chie sensei once again shows how capable adult she is.
I just hope Kaya could be under her protection for real... mother mental state is so long gone
and I'm not sure how father will do after this considering the worse case.

I physically cringe a little when Mirai started yelling that it doesn't matter anymore that the fact Mutsu indeed loves her as a daughter even way back then since she's already dead. Like man if only you have all those years thinking things through and have a talk with them like an actual adult, even just through the phone or letter, MAN OH MAN IF ONLY :haa:

Also that form is really yikes, I ended up saying "Eww wtf!" out loud, Kaya please make sure to go the passafist route next chapter to wake your mom from her delulu, and no not pacifist, pass-a-fist, thank you 🙏

Thanks for the chapter!

Question for the translators, has Mirai's name been in kanji this whole time? It was in katakana on the family tree so I assumed it was like that in other places too.

To be fair, looking at Mirai's childhood in chapter 43 Mutsu was a fucking terrible communicator.

Always looking stern and dismissing Mirai's feelings and refusing to tell her shit.

The kind of parent where you wonder if someone put a curse on them where if they say something nice to their kid they'll explode or something.

Thank you for the chapter, yeah while it's likely to happen, I don't see redemption as a fairly feasible redemption for Mirai at this point. After what Mirai has done so far in her pursuit of payback for herself and Yoshie it wouldn't feel like its deserved. I mean I can see it happening either via Kaya hugging her mom, the teacher talking her down, or the ghost of Mutsu manifests in front of her daughter and some Naruto/Modulo levels of talk no jutsu happens. Ideally for it to have the most impact it would have happened while Mutsu was still alive so you can get the suspense of whether or not Mirai accepts what she's saying as truth or if its a last ditch lie to save the fam but oh well. I'm interested in seeing how the mangaka resolves this arc. Because a mere Kaya punch as epic as it would be it wouldn't be able to clear away the baggage that the recent reveals have shown has been building up to this point. The two attempts at edgelord womb weaponization for great vengeance and now her wanting Kaya to go down with the ship as well when pop goes the wmd baby isn't something that should be handwaved.
The reveal that Kaya feels guilt and blames herself over not fulfilling her promise was a nice touch and may bring some interesting developments from her in later arcs.

You should know that both Mutsu and Nana are homeschooled so they're inherently not good with sociallizing. But then again you looked at Mirai when she's in highschool there were signs Mutsu was trying to look out for Mirai, she knew about the bullying and actively saying she will call the school to help, she still didn't want Mirai to be homeschooled like Nana mainly because there's not much to teach from her perspective and imo Mutsu wanted Mirai to make friends outside of the house. Hiring a tutor isn't exactly a good choice either since Mutsu is visibly still busy and can't involve an innocent bystander into the house at that point.

By that point Mirai refused to acknowledge any effort Mutsu put in to be at least a proper mother, she promptly left the house after knowing about the curse womb, blamed her mom for her aunt's dead with no proof and always gravitate toward the thought that Mutsu hated her.

And whether it's by accident or not, you're pretty much making light of their house's tradition atm. Looking stern doesn't mean Mutsu doesn't love her daughters, and ofc she can't say anything because the moment Mirai is involved things can get more complicated and get out of her control, like some of the branch houses can stir more shit up for her to clean for example, they might even harm Mirai, kidnap her then make her into a proper "curse womb-sama", or worse force their son on her to make her born "Kaya" to wiggle their way into the main house, so many options, even Nana didn't tell her a thing since childhood why do you think Mutsu would utter a word about it.

Let me ask you, would you tell your younger daughter that she's supposed to be raised brainwashed, listen to order like a slave and die in agony to murder someone else? It's that's serious for them. Mirai has all the time in her hand after leaving the house yet she never get a second for herself to think again why Mutsu was so adamant about not involving her into the house's affair after having a child of her own.

Also it's not like Mirai doesn't know everything, she named her first daughter "Kaya" for a reason, she knows bits and pieces of it, just not the truly fucked up stuff that the house has been doing for generations. Mirai tried to poke her neck to where she shouldn't belong, and Mutsu prevented her from going there up until she got ahold of Yoshi's handbook.

Nana even implied that she thought Mutsu loves Mirai more than her back then because Mirai's name came through Mutsu's own idea, since "Nana" was the mandatory name for the 7th firstborn child, and while Mirai get to freely do whatever she want, Nana got shackled with their tradition and duty since childhood. Imo there're a lot angles you have to look through to even get a good idea of what going on, but at least in this context, accident or not Mirai's already killed her mother, she can't take it back anymore.

Okay but does anyone else feel bad about the dad?

Mirai: "Hey so honey I actually was supposed to be a spiritual suicide bomb against the political enemies of my family which is why I ran away and I was kinda using you to to turn myself into a spiritual suicide bomb to wipe out my family but I kinda screwed up and gave birth to our daughter so I decided to try again after realizing she inherited our powers. Oh yeah we also have super powers and can fight daemons and stuff like it's Warhammer 40K. Teehee I'm so sorry to put you through all this. I love you. Oh yeah, our daughter is also a walking nuclear bomb of psychic energy."

My man's gonna need several bottles of alcohol and some counseling.

The first name of characters is pretty much always written in Katakana in dialogue, including the Ebisumori priestesses (Mutsu/ムツ, Nana/ナナ, Kaya/カヤ)

Hi @ScarredPossum , I've been trying to find you to ask if you wanted any help with scanlating Kaya-chan? If you would like another collaborator, maybe we can figure out how to connect on discord? (I have some experience with transcription, translation, cleaning, and typesetting, though I'm not great at redrawing.) I tried messaging you on MangaUpdates but I guess your username there is different.

Hi! Thanks for offering to help, I'll send you a DM.
Btw I'm only present on Mangadex, I don't have accounts anywhere else (at this time).
