The ml is too funny it's kinda funny that they all got emotional and just accept that he draws erotic stuff. I actually don't mind the 8 years age gap but the current her rn is a minor that's a bit concerning author should've made her 17-18 instead
I uh.. hate to break it to you but Japan's age of consent and marriageable age (for females) under federal law is 16 (for males it's 18). Up until 2023 the age of consent (as indicated in an 1896 statute: Penal Code of Japan (1896, Article 176-7)) was 13. Now to be fair, basically all 47 prefectures had passed Bylaws for Protecting and Nurturing Adolescents (all but Nagano by 1998) which helped define and criminalize statutory rape and all of them set the age of consent for sexual acts to 18. These laws were supplemented by the enactment of a federal child protection law (in 1999) that criminalized sexual acts for a fee (prostitution) with anyone under the age of majority (18). Nonetheless, unlike in the US for example where, regardless of the age of marriage, sexual acts with a minor are criminalized, Japan (under common law) has a weird af clause that says that if you're working towards serious marriage, it's ok. (Don't quote me on that one, I wasn't able to pull up the court ruling so I'm working off memory here.) Yeah there are also rulings regarding grooming and age gaps relating to SA/Statutory Rape, but not worth getting into. It should be fairly obvious from the culture that enforcement for a lot of the above was somewhat irregular; you have teenage "gravure idols" and the whole "junior idol" thing with 13yo girls paraded around in skimpy clothing (swimsuits, bikinis), just look at manga/anime and the obsession with high school girls and the way many draw the uniforms. I'm not saying other countries don't face similar issues, and I'm not especially problemetizing Japan or saying that p*dophilia is the norm, but these matters do persist (at least within a dominant subculture).
Just wanted to add that I'm also very weirded out by the age gap here. Not that I haven't read worse, but a lot of things strike me very differently now compared to how they did when I first started reading manga a few years ago in high school.
