Well, they quite stupid but less in the novel.
The pope (all asshole he is) he treated his son very preciously, Van have basically grow up in a ivory tower with a silver spoon. He have everything and didn't need to really think about anything at all. The church taught him about god and all the thing a religion usually taught but nothing about real life.
In the novel he just came and ask some help beacuse it's right to help someone in need without thinking 1 sec about the fact that MC is indirectly the victim twice by him.

The knight is just stubborn as fuck. After the incident in chap 1 he's father put him in prison because MC was still the crown prince fiance a this time and to put some plumb in his head.
But even after 2 month, the knight still think he's in the right.
In the end it's mama who will shake he's will with 2 argumùents :
- Another women flirt with her fiance, she didn't behave right but she's not entirely in the wrong either
- Instead of ending this story in private, they made it public and her life as a women and noble is finish ever, this punition is way more harsh that what she is accused to.

@ServeWu It's half of the job of a ruling noble. When everybody's trying to gain as much advantage as possible, anyone who can't play the same game will be left crying in the end. Iris at least can see that to really prosper, she needs to make her whole fief prosper, preferably the whole country along with it, not just amass personal wealth and power. But it's still the same game.
