That's pretty reductive dude but I'll be damned if I didn't think you were talking about "Reborn as a Barrier Master."
It was closer to 10 but I still take exception to your "for shock value."
Yeah that's definitely it lol, I actually gave it more credit than I realized by thinking they waited until 20 chapters in to do that, instead of 8.

I remember having issue with how much of a tonal shift that single stretch of 3 or 4 chapters was. It went from basically slice of life, to misery porn, then back to slice of life where the MC is just traveling around collecting wives.

I think you should reread it buddy, I probably should too. It seems like it took longer because the story actually scoots along pretty quick despite releasing over 5+ years but it's harder to notice with how packed the pages are. Issue 1 started off with him being reincarnated directly into dismal slavery for a few pages before being bought up and what happened to the lady was established in the first chapter as well. The events of note seem to go by quickly while the slice of life moments seem to drag on a bit by comparison. Between his entrance and what happened to the lady before and what lead up to it it's fairly consistent for the tone of that particular kingdoms circumstance, you just don't see it as much when he's young and frankly I'm expecting something bad to happen if the writer doesn't put himself in a corner.
