Assuming our theory with the girls being supernatural is correct, this manga might just join that long list. The whole theory easily falls apart though, if those exotic eye designs turned out to be just that, some "perfectly normal", "definitely human in nature" exotic eye designs. I guess we just have to wait.

After thinking about it for a bit and not finding anything that matched what I was thinking of, I'm pretty sure I was getting Sankrea mixed up with another series. Can't figure out what the other series I mixed it up with, but I did remember there were parts where the MC got close to being literally eaten during it, so I'm pretty sure Sankrea was the one I was mostly thinking of.
Yeah, the eye thing is still a bit of a toss up on if it's an aesthetic thing or not. I'd like to think that when the author goes out of their way to use such a drastic change in the way that they draw something like that, it's meant to have some kind of significance, but it might just be significant in a different way.
Although, I'd argue that that the eyes along with the character designs and appearance do seem to really be leading the reader to interpret them in a way that associates them with the some kind of supernatural creature. ..... Or it could just be more bait from the author.
Edit: Yup, pretty sure I managed to mix up the story from Criminale! with Sankrea.
