so the narrative portrayed him as dubious.
I think that's entirely fair, since it's the most accurate representation of him. He'd look more villainous from Maomao's perspective as well, considering how fond of him she is.

So that other guy is .... color blind ?
And that's former consort who left earlier, right ? She's Jenshi's double stunt now ? What for, tho ?

This is the excerpt from the novel for this scene:

And here's the page from the manga
101.jpg

I'm not a translator, so I'm merely forwarding what I've gathered from talking with translators:
In the LN, as well as the manga, it is Shi Shou that is telling Rakan that Rakan is the one responsible for investigating, not the other way around.

A possible interpretation as to why Rakan is in charge here is that the gun was given to Rakan to investigate everything, which would also explain how he was able to have the gun reverse engineered.

Also, I'm not sure if you're comparing this with the Official English translation because that version has Rakan telling Shi Shou to investigate, but this wouldn't be the first instance of the Official English translation (LN and Manga) getting things wrong (LN being the bigger problem).
Damn, it's a shame to learn that there's differences this big between translations. Since I started the manga right after finishing the anime, then the LN right after Maomao was kidnapped, I thought it was me mixing up but no:

“Strange indeed,” said Shishou. “How do you suppose the fiends got their
hands on such implements?”
“Excellent question. I thought it was your job to answer it,” Lakan said.
“In principle, yes, but... Well, I’m sorry to say that the person in charge of
getting that answer from those who might know it got a little
overenthusiastic, and now I’m afraid none of them will be telling us
anything.”
It was easy enough to guess what the person had gotten overenthusiastic
about. Criminals, let alone would-be assassins of a member of the royal
family, had no rights. Still, to get that “overenthusiastic” about torturing
people who were supposed to provide valuable information was a major
misstep. Were Shishou’s people really that bad at their jobs?
That's what I read on my J-Novel Club translation. Frankly, that one still makes the most sense to me. I don't understand why would Rakan would have his men not be cautious enough to not kill such an important witness. I would understand though for Shishou, and it's a very common trope, as it's a better trade to risk high suspicion rather than let a witness talk and certainly incriminate him.

Well, I'm a bit confused but I'll keep reading and I hope I'll understand that whole conspiracy in the end. But dang, the story is already complicated as is without translation errors 😭

Rakan could be lying for all we know, so that he throws off anyone involved.

Damn, we're finally at this point in the novel. I did feel it was pushed too quickly in the LN, but I admit I was getting a little impatient lol

I read it on Bato quite a while ago, but they never got the order of the pages right so it is nice to read it in a coherent order.

As for the chapter, I can't help but think it was too suspicious that the other maid was there to be "taken hostage". Was she not reported missing? Or did she return to her post and not tell anyone what happened?
Do the others even know who she is? or her connection with Maomao? How would they know to look for that person? especially as the turnover rate for the maids is higher.

This comes from reading the LNs, and this is def one of my favorite passages.
It will be discovered that she is missing, but there may be some form of 'insurance' to give more time before they are caught. Sui Rei, and Shi Sui will have their moments in the limelight, where all the actors play the parts they need to play.

I was super confused reading this initially so I reread the whole series and I have a few conjectures!!! I think I'm likely wrong about one and right about the other.

I think
Shi Sho (Rou Ran's father) is descended from the original empress who set up the colored door shrine. This one is practically confirmed in this chapter because he's red-green colorblind. He might be the previous empress dowager (pedo king's mom)'s illegitimate child or maybe just a close relative who was obviously more capable than her son, so she favored him. Most likely the latter bc hiding a whole pregnancy would've been pretty hard. I also think that Shi Sui is related to Sui Rei (also practically confirmed this chapter) and Sui Rei is obviously aligned with Shi Shou so maybe Shi Sui is literally the consort Rou Ran? No one knows what she looks like because of her makeup, and she has huge tits so... Their whole motivation is that they believe they have a right to the throne, since the current emperor and his son (jinshi) don't have that colorblindness there may be something off about their lineage. The whole thing can broadly be categorized into the fox faction and the raccoon dog faction if seen this way so idk? Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

It's great to see Lakan again. He's still a sly old fox, but he genuinely love his wife and daughter.

What's gonna happen to the manga now after the artist caught doing tax evasion? I'm already reading the other manga run anyway but this is still sad
