I think that's entirely fair, since it's the most accurate representation of him. He'd look more villainous from Maomao's perspective as well, considering how fond of him she is.so the narrative portrayed him as dubious.
the tax one? pretty sure the mangaka and their consultants already fix it based on the newsDidn't the mangaka get arrested? How is this still coming out?
Damn, it's a shame to learn that there's differences this big between translations. Since I started the manga right after finishing the anime, then the LN right after Maomao was kidnapped, I thought it was me mixing up but no:This is the excerpt from the novel for this scene:
And here's the page from the manga
I'm not a translator, so I'm merely forwarding what I've gathered from talking with translators:
In the LN, as well as the manga, it is Shi Shou that is telling Rakan that Rakan is the one responsible for investigating, not the other way around.
A possible interpretation as to why Rakan is in charge here is that the gun was given to Rakan to investigate everything, which would also explain how he was able to have the gun reverse engineered.
Also, I'm not sure if you're comparing this with the Official English translation because that version has Rakan telling Shi Shou to investigate, but this wouldn't be the first instance of the Official English translation (LN and Manga) getting things wrong (LN being the bigger problem).
That's what I read on my J-Novel Club translation. Frankly, that one still makes the most sense to me. I don't understand why would Rakan would have his men not be cautious enough to not kill such an important witness. I would understand though for Shishou, and it's a very common trope, as it's a better trade to risk high suspicion rather than let a witness talk and certainly incriminate him.“Strange indeed,” said Shishou. “How do you suppose the fiends got their
hands on such implements?”
“Excellent question. I thought it was your job to answer it,” Lakan said.
“In principle, yes, but... Well, I’m sorry to say that the person in charge of
getting that answer from those who might know it got a little
overenthusiastic, and now I’m afraid none of them will be telling us
anything.”
It was easy enough to guess what the person had gotten overenthusiastic
about. Criminals, let alone would-be assassins of a member of the royal
family, had no rights. Still, to get that “overenthusiastic” about torturing
people who were supposed to provide valuable information was a major
misstep. Were Shishou’s people really that bad at their jobs?
Rakan could be lying for all we know, so that he throws off anyone involved.Damn, it's a shame to learn that there's differences this big between translations. Well, I'm a bit confused but I'll keep reading and I hope I'll understand that whole conspiracy in the end. But dang, the story is already complicated as is without translation errors 😭
That’s prolly the official serial version. It’s released on manga up app.I'm sure I read this chapter on aggregator site month ago, translation differs tho
The one was taken hostage was Shi Sui (Consort Rouran) right???
Do the others even know who she is? or her connection with Maomao? How would they know to look for that person? especially as the turnover rate for the maids is higher.I read it on Bato quite a while ago, but they never got the order of the pages right so it is nice to read it in a coherent order.
As for the chapter, I can't help but think it was too suspicious that the other maid was there to be "taken hostage". Was she not reported missing? Or did she return to her post and not tell anyone what happened?
