Any attempts of pinning it down to a particular period in our history is going to make your head start to spin since it has things from early Imperial China history (3rd century) as well as stuff from the very late period (18th century)... at the same time.
From what I know, the author has already addressed this by saying something along the lines "I've given up, so you should too."

Basically, the author is just pulling stuff from different periods as they go.

So, should we just take this as a fantasy about late “historical” China without trying to tie it to any eras, events or people?

I believe it is directly related. The Shi are a Very Old Clan for this empire so it is related.

The Shi have ties back to the Queen Mother we heard about in the shrine, those that are colorblind who are direct descendants of her. Shisui I believe is not related to the Imperial House, besides the Founding Mother connection. But there is someone who is, and that will heavily affect the way they, and perhaps some of the other younger ones are dealt with when all of this boils over and people come a Knockin.

In this case, the mother and head of the Shi Clan was one of the former Emperor's high Consort, who was given back to her family and then the prime minister married. He is from a branch family and she from the head one.

interesting that she keeps the hairpin on her, wonder if its going to be used later. like if hes going to recognized her by it cause shes wearing a mask. kind of a chekhov's gun so im sure itll be important maybe idk.
