Riiight, so the envoys are from the country of origin of the Great Queen, who set up the colourblind labyrinth to ensure that her descendants would inherit the throne. However, with the current emperor not being pure enough and Jinshi being heir apparent?, not to mention the coming children. The ages old conspirators have decided to take drastic moves, to ensure their bloodline once more sits at the top spot.
Quite a long lasting active sabotage plan and quite overly complicated assassination plots, when something much more simple could work too. Oh well, this is far more interesting than anything realistic.

But what do they honestly think they can do now? One stray cat ruined all the plans of mice and men and I doubt either of the two big raccoons hold enough power and influence to directly challenge the emperor. Not to mention lil'tanuki and tall-small-tanuki don't seem to be at all interested in the grand plan beyond family obligations.

Whatsoever, Tanuki soup is served soon!

Thanks for the translation. That wasn't in my bingo card. No, sir... Time to reread.

The comparison image there on page 14 is really good at showing the difference between Shi Sui in both her roles in the eyes. As the maid Shi Sui her eyes are sparkling full of life and as Rou Ran they're empty and doll-like.

Love Shen Mei's (the mother's) appearance here too. Very classic look.

"This kid's trouble."
You just figured it out?

"Just another rat."
Cat.

Slightly more dolled up than usual.

I've long since lost the plot thread.
So just now Maomao went to that shed because they make guns there. She got interested in them during the frog hunt arc, and now she's planning to make one that can't be traced by the forensic detectives who will be after her once she completes her plot of assassinating the emperor so she can take the throne and once and for all end the distribution of dolls in Jinshi's image, because she finds them distasteful.

When the manga is usually not violent, the sight of weapons really puts a weight on the situation.
It's all about contrasts. It's like swearing. If some bum from the hood swears every two words, it doesn't make much of a difference, but if the shy and polite scientist tells someone to fuck off it's got a bit more punch.

I think you could have just use Tanuki. I'm sure most people know it more readyly then a term like "racoon dog"
Yeah, I think it's on the same level as oni. A well-known creature of myth. Not as well-known as words like samurai, ninja, or sensei, but more known than kappa, kitsune, or any honorific other than -san. Well, that's my impression, at least. It also doesn't make the language a weird Japenglish like those honorifics.

As the maid Shi Sui her eyes are sparkling full of life and as Rou Ran they're empty and doll-like.
I think it's more than her maid eyes have a rounder top, which gives a friendlier appearance than the more straight ones, which gives a much sharper look.

I don't remember this from the novel.

It seems like way too little light to disrupt plant growth. They probably weren't welding, so were they just doing tons of friction cutting and generating sparks?

I had to double check but didnt we already knew that? That Rou Ran disguised herself as a maid so she could go around in the Court?
Yeah we learnt that a bit after Maomao got kidnapped. Though I guess it didn't spell it out like this completely.

Us weebs would know Tanuki but Racoon Dog is the correct English term.

Really liked that we were given so many but subtle hints that there was more to Sui Rui:

  • Anime protagonist design. The colored hair and eyes don't lie.
  • She first appeared at the same time as the cat Mao Mao, right around the secret passage out of the Inner Palace.
  • We were never told who she was the maid of. She was only seen when they had time to goof of. The only time she's seen working was at the bathhouse, when the point was that it was unofficial work so she was safe from oversight.
  • In the bathhouse, she got away and avoided the younger consort.
  • As Rou Ran, she made sure to keep up her haughty persona and barely talked, wore distractingly luxurious clothes and heavy makeup, which made easier her deception as a maid and the cover from her maids.
  • Coming to the village, Mao Mao noticed she slept with the composure of a lady.
  • And finally, she basically told us that the scary noble owning the place was her mother.
  • And the tanuki mask as explained in the extra pages, the nickname of her father.

Regarding her drinking (or eating?) abortificients, I find this a bit surprising because you would think that a clan with a conspiracy to take the throne could use an heir from the Emperor for legitimacy. I thought that they had left the palace because of that, once Lou Ran was pregnant.

That plotpoint seemed especially important since there was interest about Gyokuyou's pregnancy too and if she carried a male heir this time.

It's all so strange since the Shishou clan basically already almost won: if Lou Ran had a son, she'd be made Emperess, and they would only need to try to assasinate again (?) our Jin Shi (+ the Emperor at some point)

This actually isn't a problem. Shisui appears wearing a laundry service uniform, same as Xiaolan. Just like her, those wearing that uniform aren't maids (or more accurately attendants/ladies-in-waiting) of any specific consort, but servants working for the entire inner palace's laundry service.

The other points are definitely tells though!

I think changing the spelling to indicate an accent is going to be more trouble than it's worth, considering the envoys are most likely minor characters and shouldn't be around too much longer.

Lou Ran is not pregnant. The Emperor refuses to sleep with her and only keeps her as a consort to avoid trouble with her influential father. In fact the method Lou Ran used to slip out and play maid confused the Emperor so much he always left after giving basic greetings and a wellness check.

i think what they want is to take the throne without even need to have anything to do with the current emperor... much less to have rou ran having kids with the current emperor...

it should be obvious that they are the descendant of the first emperor with the color blindness thing... they want to usurp the throne because they think its their right in the first place...

i could be wrong because maybe i forgot about something tho...

Did we? I thought it was fairly obvious.
I thought so too. We find out the maid "Shi-Sui" doesn't actually exist, that Rou Ran would have her maids dress up as her and was currently missing from the palace with a maid in her place, then find out that Shi-Sui is a sister of Sui-Rei and a part of the Shi clan. So Shi-Sui a maid who doesn't actually work at the palace leave the same time Rou Ran is missing... like come on... I think the audience was supposed to realize before Mao Mao
